The Flash is a popular DC superhero who has run through several mediums of entertainment, including comic books, television series, and films. The evolution of The Flash over the years has been very expansive, and we’ve seen him in various iterations and interpretations, evolving in both powers and storylines.
While his evolution has varied in different media adaptations, his origins and powers have mostly remained consistent. He is a speedster who got his powers due to a chemical reaction caused by a mix of being struck by lightning and being drenched with certain chemicals to go along with that. The following list shows how Barry Allen evolved as The Flash before Ezra Miller’s latest Flash movie.
Evolution of The Flash
The Flash in the Comics
Barry Allen as The Flash
The Flash’s character originally debuted with Jay Garrick’s Scarlet Speedster in Flash Comics in 1940. After this Golden Age Flash, Barry Allen took the mantle and became the central figure in the Silver Age from 1956. From there on, he was a part of several different comic runs, including “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” “Flashpoint,” “The New 52,” and “Rebirth and Beyond.”
Throughout these comic book runs, we also saw Wally West’s Flash, along with multiple other speedsters. Going through the ages, the Flash became an iconic character battling a plethora of speedsters and other villains while also becoming one of the founding members of the Justice League.
The Flash on TV

In 1990, The Flash made his first notable jump from the comic book pages to the TV when John Wesley Shipp played Barry Allen. He starred in two seasons of the series. Then the character became a prominent figure in several animated TV shows, including Justice League: The Animated Series and Young Justice. We even saw a version of the character (Bart Allen) in the live-action series Smallville, which began in 2001.
But the most popular version of the character came with the 2014 TV series from The CW. Grant Gustin first made his debut as Barry Allen in Arrow season 2 in 2013. Then from 2014 onwards, he starred in his own show. Finally, Gustin’s iconic version of the character ended his run after 9 long seasons in May 2023.
But in the meanwhile, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen also made a couple of quick TV cameos in The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event and 2022’s Peacemaker series on HBO Max (now MAX).

Ezra Miller as Barry Allen
While the Scarlet Speedster continued to be a popular character in multiple TV shows, he also made the jump to animated and live-action movies. In the early 2010s, Barry Allen became a regular in several DC animated films, including Justice League Doom, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and many more DCAU movies.
Then finally, in 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ezra Miller made his DCEU debut as Barry Allen. He continued to appear in 2017’s Justice League and 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Following that, 9 long years of development brought us Miller’s solo The Flash movie in 2023, which was appreciated by many. But unfortunately became WB’s biggest box office bomb of all time.
Now, we expect to see a rebooted version of the character in James Gunn’s DC Universe. These highlights provide a general overview of The Flash’s development in the comics, television, and movie realms.
