While Disney’s CinemaCon presentation initially confirmed the Avengers: Endgame rerelease would have new footage, specifics were not mentioned. That changed on Saturday at the Sands Film Festival, where Joe Russo offered clarity on what fans can expect. Speaking via Zoom, Russo detailed that the added material is not merely a deleted scene but an integral narrative bridge.

“It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame,” Russo revealed. He further emphasized the strategic importance of the addition, calling it a “critical companion story” and a direct “setup for what you’re gonna watch in December when you see Avengers: Doomsday.”

It is an unprecedented use of a rerelease to actively continue serialized storytelling rather than just commemorate a past box office juggernaut. With Avengers: Endgame having grossed over $2.799 billion globally and being the emotional ending to Phase Three, this new footage offers a unique opportunity. “It’s an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way,” Russo noted (via Deadline).
