One Piece live-action Season 2 hit streaming giant yesterday, on March 10, 2026. As fans set sail with the Straw Hats to Elbaf, Tomorrow Studios and Netflix have set their sights on another legendary title. The creators of Eiichiro Oda’s live-action series have confirmed to bring Edo Japan to life in the cult classic Samurai Champloo.

Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements personally told Variety that the project is all set to sail soon. The live-action project of the 2004 anime is reportedly in its early production, and the production team aims to retain the series’ hip-hop music and other core elements. While speaking to Variety, Clements shared the announcement, which sent the anime community into a frenzy. He said:

We had dinner with [Watanabe] in Japan and said, if we move forward on doing ‘Samurai Champloo,’ we really want you to be a part of the creative. We were thrilled that he was willing to do that.

The anime is famous for its “lo-fi” hip-hop soundtrack, primarily produced by the late, legendary Nujabes and Fat Jon. However, no dates or release window have been set so far.

Netflix One Piece Team Will Reimagine Samurai Champloo

Tomorrow Studios, the company linked to Netflix’s One Piece live-action, is developing a live-action version of Samurai Champloo, which was originally released in 2004 and ran till 2005. Plus, Shinichiro Watanabe will be attached to the live-action project in a creative role.

The producers are looking to capture the lightning in a bottle they found with their recent nautical adventure. For the unversed, Shinichiro Watanabe is the genius mind behind the popular classic hit Cowboy Bebop. The same anime was adapted into Netflix’s live-action in 2021, but failed to earn praise from fans. Obviously, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo set an unprecedented standard for the anime industry. Not even Watanabe can recreate it.

Samurai Champloo is set in an alternate version of the Edo period. It tells the story of three unlikely companions, Mugen, Jin, and Fuu. Mugen is a wild and unpredictable swordsman who infuses hip-hop or break-dance moves into his fighting. Meanwhile, Jin is a stoic and traditional ronin, and Fuu happens to be a brave young waitress who brings them together to find a mysterious samurai who “smells of sunflowers.”

The decision to adapt Samurai Champloo shows that the industry is moving away from just picking the biggest, most “shonen” titles and is instead looking for stories with deep artistic merit. Much like the One Piece series, this new adaptation will need to balance intense action with character-driven storytelling.

Adapting that blend for real actors and real swords is a practical challenge. The producers point to their work on One Piece as an example of what creator collaboration can achieve for big anime adaptations. And they don’t want to rush the project, given how easy it is to lose tone when teams rush.

Furthermore, the scale of this project suggests that the era of “cheap” anime adaptations is officially over. Fans love and expect cinematic quality that justifies the series adaptation from anime to live-action.

Adelstein and Clements reportedly flunked badly in doing justice with the Cowboy Bebop live-action, and they plan not to disappoint Shinichiro Watanabe a second time. The duo has asked Watanabe to be more involved in the latest project, similar to Oda’s deep involvement in the One Piece live-action production and creativity. Adelstein told Variety:

We’ve learned [that] having the creator there to bless the creative is really important.

Samurai Champloo‘s hip-hop culture was deliberate for a reason because the protagonists were created to represent a minority culture in the show. If they can replicate the authenticity they brought to the Straw Hat crew, Samurai Champloo could very well become the next “mega hit.”

For instance, the series could utilize the lo-fi music and instill vigour into the narrative, much like how One Piece Live-action has achieved by staying faithful to Oda’s vision. At any rate, the journey to find the sunflower samurai is about to begin again, and this time, the whole world will be watching.

Samurai Champloo is streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu (select regions).
