Gaming open worlds have the potential to make or break games as we have seen so often with modern games. Grand Theft Auto 5 revolutionized the way forward for modern open-world games by getting everything right about exploring the vast map of Los Santos making use of every corner of the map.
The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have been some of the best games in modern times, with the open environment offering intrinsic details that captivate gamers as they explore the world around them more and more.
Poorly made gaming open worlds, on the other hand, can break the entire game. Add side quests that add no value to the overall game, and the game will fade from memory quite soon. These are the games with the worst gaming open worlds, as called out by gamers.
Assassin’s Creed Did Gaming Open Worlds Right But Also Got a Lot Wrong

The first game in the franchise got a lot of things right and was an ambitious project that took shape in a way nobody would have anticipated. When the game came out, gamers were actually astounded at the size of the map that was explorable. The game laid the foundation for how a modern game can mix ancient history and deliver brilliant storytelling, while also introducing some amazing stealth action.

All that being said, a lot of potential was wasted with an empty and repetitive open world. The game’s side-quests were also quite repetitive and uninteresting to many gamers. All of these were a lot improved over the following titles in the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
Dynasty Warriors 9 Had a Massive Open-World

Dynasty Warriors 9 had a massive open-world map with very little to actually do. The game has very few picturesque locations, empty plains, and a massive section filled with forests that serve no purpose. Many structures in the game were just copied sections repeated over and over.

Forspoken, A Monotonous, Copy-Paste Open-World
The open world in Forspoken looked bland and copied-pasted for most parts of the game
Another copy-paste open-world game, Forspoken spoiled the experience for gamers along with some horrible writing. It was sad to see the game’s potential being so badly wasted by a badly written storyline, repetitive missions, and an open world that gives no incentive for gamers to explore.

Games like Fallout made use of abandoned areas with interesting side-quests, whereas the handful of side quests and the pointless barren wasteland make Forspoken far from being any similar.

Atomic Heart
Players got lost in the world of Atomic Heart quite quickly
Atomic Heart has a brilliant opening few hours that grabs gamers’ attention amazingly well. The open-world sections give gamers the impression that they were forced into the game as if to join the long list of open-world games.
Getting from one point to another is also made quite cumbersome with the addition of “Alarm Levels” that go off every time players get caught in a camera. Finally, the game also lacks a fast-travel option for players to skip the pointless world, which makes gamers wonder if the open world in the game was added just to stretch the length of the campaign as it felt quite unnecessary.

Diablo 4 Could Just Have Been a Linear Game

The game’s open world adds nothing to the game and is quite empty for most part of the game. Side-quests in the game include at best an NPC that gives players a mundane, fetch quest that players complete in between fighting the zombies.

The game also suffered from the lack of a proper endgame as levelling up also made no difference after a certain point. The side-quests in the game prevented players from exploring the open world as players skipped from one act to another, which led many to agree that Diablo 4 could have been a better game with a linear approach.
Gaming open worlds feel brilliant when given a purpose and built with attention to detail given to every part of the surroundings. Linear games have the advantage of prioritizing the storyline and character arc more than having to focus on an open world when there’s no real need for one.
