The first Whalefall trailer is out now for the upcoming deep sea survival movie. The upcoming thriller wastes no time in presenting us with an absolutely wild situation.

“Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

The upcoming film is an adaptation of author Daniel Kraus‘ eponymous 2023 novel, and stars Austin Abrams. The film also stars Josh Brolin as Abrams’ father. Whalefall is directed by Brian Duffield, based on a screenplay by him and Daniel Kraus. It is produced by Brian Grazer, Brian Duffield, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum.

Whalefall trailer review

As someone who has a dislike of the open water, the Whalefall trailer was one that instantly worked for me. On its surface, the movie sounds like an absolutely insane concept. It’s highly unlikely that someone could actually survive being eaten by a whale, let alone being swallowed whole by one. However, in the world of this movie, not only does it happen, but it seems like a terrifying prospect.

The trailer does a great job capturing not only the chaos of the premise, but also showcasing the film’s underwater nature as a bit unnerving. The water and undersea sequences are all shown in mostly dim light, allowing for not a ton of sight in the murky and dark waters. This makes the moments where Abrams’ Jay Gardiner is inadvertantly chased by the whale even scarier, as it’s tough to see things just like it would be for Jay.

Of course, the concept and premise of the movie as a whole is a bit far-fetched. The movie looks like it will maybe not be the best, but for those who want a pure thriller about something you’ve likely never seen before, then Whalefall might scratch that itch.
