A new look at Jason Momoa‘s Lobo in Supergirl has been revealed. The film’s marketing is now picking up steam, with its director also explaining how traumatized the Girl of Steel is.
What is the update on Supergirl?
While fans are excited for Supergirl, many are also eager to see Jason Momoa’s take on Lobo in the film. The character has been shown sparingly in the trailers, but a new photo released by Empire Magazine provides a detailed look at the character.
EXCLUSIVE ?️Jason Momoa was the only person who could play Supergirl’s Lobo, says Craig Gillespie.”I couldn’t imagine anyone else,” the director tells Empire. “I was thrilled to have him.”Read more: https://t.co/4JtgRqkBsU pic.twitter.com/p3xO3GOooF— Empire (@empiremagazine) June 2, 2026
The photo shows Lobo on his signature space hog, the cosmic motorcycle. The photo shows Lobo smoking a cigar as he rides away from a fiery, destruction-filled landscape. Lobo’s makeup looks strikingly similar to the recent Hot Toys figure that gave fans a closer look at the anti-hero. Fans can get a better look at Lobo’s bike on the film’s official popcorn bucket.
Supergirl director Craig Gillespie also told Empire Magazine how Kara is a traumatized and unapologetic DCU hero who is very different from Superman. The director said, “[Supergirl] has got a lot of trauma, a lot of demons; she’s unapologetic. You get to have a character that can be punky and edgy and not take off those rough edges.”
Unlike Superman, Kara spent years witnessing Krypton’s destruction and its aftermath before arriving on Earth. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the graphic novel which the film adapts, shows a hardened version of the Girl of Steel. Following the solo film, Supergirl is expected to join her cousin in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow. The film recently received its rating from the MPA, which noted that it contains strong violence.
Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie, from a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira. The film is produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.
