Stranger Things co-creators Ross and Matt Duffer have revealed how Season 5 Volume 2 sets Nancy Wheeler on a path to find herself. Volume 2, episode 6, “Escape from Camazotz,” leads Nancy and Jonathan to a confession and an “unproposal” that left several Stranger Things fans confused.
And the series co-creators have confirmed that it was a breakup. “They are broken up,” Matt Duffer confirmed in an interview with People, explaining that the decision had been planned for some time to give Nancy the opportunity to stand on her own.
It’s hard to recall when exactly that idea came, but I think us — and the writers — all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself.
Ross Duffer also added, calling the couple’s relationship “trauma bond,” while Matt Duffer argued, “I mean, how many people wind up with their girlfriend or boyfriend that they met in high school?”
Played by Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, Nancy and Jonathan have been one of the Netflix series’ central couples. They began dating in Season 2 and remained together until cracks in their relationship emerged during Season 4, eventually leading to their separation.
Spoiler Alert !!!!!The Following Article Contains Major Spoilers From Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2!!
What Happened to Nancy and Jonathan in Stranger Things Season 5?
After growing distance since Season 4, Stranger Things Season 5 finally brings long-simmering tension between Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers to a breaking point.
Volume 1 reveals that Jonathan has been quietly planning to propose to Nancy, carrying an engagement ring hidden inside a John Coltrane cassette. Still, he remains unsettled by the emotional heaviness hanging between them.
That unease comes to the surface in Episode 5, when Jonathan confronts Nancy about her recent distance. Although she deflects at first, the pair are later forced into an honest reckoning when they are trapped in a room rapidly flooding with gray sludge after an explosion at Hawkins Lab.
Believing they won’t survive, Nancy and Jonathan begin confessing long-held truths. While Nancy admits she hates the band The Clash, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) confesses he despises reading her articles.
Shawn Levy, who directed Episodes 6 and 7 in Season 5, described the scene as a turning point. “They assume, understandably, that that’s the end,” Levy told Netflix, adding, “They end up having a [moment] filled with a level of honesty that is an all-timer of a Jonathan–Nancy scene.”
The confessions escalate. Jonathan admits he never applied to Emerson College, and Nancy reveals she avoided visiting him in California because she needed space.
Finally, Jonathan brings out the ring, not to propose, but to offer an “unproposal,” asking Nancy not to marry him. Nancy accepts. And as Jonathan tosses the ring away, they realise that the sludge has solidified and they have survived.
Do Nancy and Steve End Up Together in Season 5 Volume 2?
Having originally been paired with Steve Harrington, fans have long rooted for Nancy Wheeler and Steve to find their way back to each other, especially after Season 4 reignited their chemistry.
However, with the release of Stranger Things Season 5 Volumes 1 and 2, it has become increasingly clear that a Nancy–Steve reunion may not be in the cards.
After noticing Nancy’s emotional distance, Jonathan asks her in Season 5 whether she still has feelings for Steve. Nancy denies it, insisting that Steve is just a friend.

Later, when Nancy and Jonathan become trapped together, she admits that Steve understands what he wants, having previously told her about his dream of having six children.
But that future doesn’t align with Nancy’s vision for herself. She doesn’t want the same things Steve does, and more importantly, she isn’t yet sure what she wants at all. That uncertainty plays a key role in her eventual breakup with Jonathan.
With the Duffer brothers emphasizing that Nancy needs to find herself, it increasingly appears that her journey may end with independence rather than romance.
Still, with the series finale yet to unfold, nothing is entirely certain. Whether Nancy’s story ends with Steve, Jonathan, or no one at all remains to be seen.
