Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is going to dive into Maul’s life, about a year after the events of The Clone Wars. Maul was set free by Ahsoka to deal with the Clone Troopers during Order 66. Sam Witwer, who has played the role of Maul in The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Solo: A Star Wars Story, will be reprising the role in the show. He has revealed that the show wants to explore. This might give audiences an idea of what the show could be about and how long the story can stretch.
Ahead of Season 1’s release, Lucasfilm has released the first issue of a 5-part comic and confirmed that the show will return for a second season. Dave Filoni’s rationale for making the show was to explore questions that had arisen about Maul while the character appeared in other shows. The show is going to deal with Maul trying to slot himself back into the criminal underworld of the galaxy, this time, under Palpatine’s Galactic Empire.
Maul Is Going To Want His Old Position Back
Darth Maul begged Ahsoka to join him so that they could take down Darth Sidious before he could turn Anakin to the Dark Side. Palpatine has caused a lot of things to be taken away from Maul. Whether it be his position in the underworld, or the galactic order under which he thrived. Maul is going to find himself in a completely different situation than he did previously.
We know that Maul will be gunning to restart his activities in the underworld, starting on Janix. The planet is of particular interest to Maul because it was untouched by the Empire. This logic aligns perfectly with what Sam Witwer shared. He said (via ScreenRant):
“He comes from a time of knights and magic and dragons, and now he’s seeing an Empire that is sucking the magic and life and color out of the galaxy.”
Other questions about the character, such as why he chose to keep Palpatine’s secret even after he replaced him, will be explored in the story. The story is going to take place a few years before his demise, before he even knows that Obi-Wan Kenobi is alive.
Operating at a time when the Jedi are gone, Maul – Shadow Lord is likely going to explore where he thinks he finds himself, especially in contrast to his previous stations, which were instrumental in bringing down the Republic and the Jedi Order. This is uncharted territory for the former Sith Lord, so it will be interesting to see what the story tackles- and how much screen time that takes up.
Crimson Dawn Could Factor Heavily Into Maul: Shadow Lord Season 2
After the Clone Wars, the next time Maul appears chronologically is the post-credit scene of Solo: A Star Wars Story. This Maul had a red lightsaber, which probably means that at this point in the character’s history, Maul has not yet retrieved the Darksaber, which would end up in his shrine by the events of Rebels.
However, Maul has been working with Crimson Dawn for some time at this point, which means that they could feature in the second season of Maul- Shadow Lord. At some point, Maul is going to hunt for the Darksaber or come across it, which he is going to put in the shrine that fans saw in Rebels.
From how the first issue of Star Wars: Shadow of Maul sets up his story in Janix, Season One is likely going to focus on him trying to gain a new apprentice. Given that his hunt for a new apprentice continues in Rebels, where he tries to recruit Ezra Bridger to his cause, it is likely that he is either going to fail to recruit her or have her turn against him in true Sith fashion.
Given the amount of story that is to unfold between The Clone Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story, it is likely that Maul- Shadow Lord is going to receive at least one more season after Season 2. By the time Season 3 comes around, fans can expect the Crimson Dawn to play a bigger role in the story.
