Disney has released the final Moana live-action trailer ahead of its release. The latest look at the movie suggests the Dwayne Johnson-led live-action movie has captured the original’s charm.
The Moana live-action movie is set to release in theaters on July 10, 2026. Alongside Johnson, the movie is led by Catherine Laga’aia, with John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen also set to star. The movie is directed by Thomas Kail from a script written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn produce the film.
“In Disney’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
Moana trailer review
The latest look at the Moana live-action movie was a surprising one, to be quite honest. The first few looks at the movie suggested that we were in for another Disney live-action movie that’s simply trying to capitalize on the popularity of Moana. However, the newest trailer shows off a much more charming approach to the movie, and one that looks like it’s going to be adhering to the original movie a lot more closely.
The latest look at the movie features a ton of big reveals, including Jemaine Clement’s return as Tamatoa from the original film. The trailer also shows off more of the clash between Moana and Maui, as well as a colorful look at the recreation of the original movie. Maui, specifically, seems to be his normal movie self, unchanged into how indifferent he is to Moana’s struggles early on.
With Johnson lending himself to the live-action role, I was a bit cautious as to how he’d approach the character, but the movie as a whole looks to be much more in line with the original’s charm. As someone who was a lot more pessimistic about the nature of the live-action remake, the fact that Disney seems to be going to extreme lengths to capture the look and feel of the original, and make sure this is one of the better live-action adaptations they’ve done.
