Filmmaking maestro Christopher Nolan receives a special tribute ahead of The Odyssey‘s release. The director has received a special gift from San Francisco.
What did Christopher Nolan say about his theatrical tribute?
It’s been revealed that Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s flagship San Francisco New Mission location will be officially renamed the Christopher Nolan Cinema. It’s a tribute by the company to the Academy Award-winning director “whose commitment to film preservation, theatrical exhibition, and large-format presentation have defined the modern filmgoing experience.”
“San Francisco’s New Mission is a beautiful, historic, iconic cinema with more than a century of rich history,” said Nolan while reacting to this tribute. “To be recognized in this way by Alamo Drafthouse, and with this particular theater which continues the great tradition of showing films on 70mm film, is an incredible honour.”
The announcement comes as part of the 110th anniversary of the San Francisco movie palace. Additionally, Alamo Drafthouse will also screen The Odyssey when it releases next month. Tickets are already on sale for Premium Presentation formats, including 70mm, 35mm, and The Big Show large format.

Nolan is now part of a unique list of acclaimed filmmakers and performers whose names adorn Alamo Drafthouse locations. Previously honored figures include Spike Lee, John Hughes, Ivan Reitman, Bong Joon Ho, and Pam Grier. Nolan’s honor will officially take place later this year at a 70mm screening event in San Francisco, where the director will be present as the guest.
“By dedicating New Mission in Mr. Nolan’s name, we’re celebrating and thanking a filmmaker whose work has consistently championed cinema not merely as entertainment, but as a cultural inheritance worth protecting,” said Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann.
The Odyssey will hit theaters on July 17, 2026. The epic adventure features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson. Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, John Bernthal, Zendaya, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, and Jimmy Gonzales are also playing crucial roles.
