Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries (IMDb rating as of August 26, 2026: 8.6/10) is easily one of the smartest characters in anime right now. She solves poisonings, court mysteries, and complex puzzles using nothing but logic, curiosity, and a scary amount of knowledge about herbs and toxins she got by testing them on herself.
However, she’s not the only anime genius out there who solves problems with pure brainpower. Anime is full of characters who use their intelligence as their main weapon, and some of them could genuinely go toe-to-toe with Maomao in a battle of wits. After humanity gets turned to stone for thousands of years, he wakes up and decides the best move is to rebuild civilization from scratch using science. For that, all he has is the encyclopedic knowledge that he developed through pure curiosity.
He’s cured diseases, built machines, and even figured out how to make medicine using materials in nature. When Ruri got pneumonia, not only was he able to diagnose it but also make sulfonamide to cure her. Because of his nature and feats, he is also considered one of the best modern anime heroes along with Maomao.
2. Ranpo Edogawa Almost Feels Superhuman

In Bungo Stray Dogs, almost every major character has a superpower that makes them special in one way or another. Even then, they all hold a huge amount of respect for Ranpo because he surpasses them all with his sleuthing talent. However, the twist is that his talent doesn’t come from a superpower; he is simply that smart.
Furthermore, what makes him so dangerous to the Port Mafia, the primary evil organization in the anime, which happens to be one of the most feared in anime overall, is the fact that he can paint the entire picture in his mind of what happened by simply looking at the current facts. Because of this, even he believes he has a superpower.

Sora from No Game No Life is a different kind of smart compared to Maomao. Instead of medicine or deduction, his strength is in reading people. He can predict what someone will do next just by studying their personality and reactions. Furthermore, he is also a master of cheating in games. For example, he pulled out a Royal Straight Flush out of nowhere right in the beginning of the anime. He would probably beat Lakan and Maomao’s mother in Go as well.
4. Kisuke Urahara – The Genius Inventor of Soul Society

Urahara from Bleach is the type of character who’s always ten steps ahead of everyone else. He invents gadgets, runs secret experiments, and somehow always has a plan ready before anyone even knows there’s a problem. His genius isn’t loud; he acts chill and mysterious, but everything he does is calculated. Like Maomao, he prefers to observe quietly before revealing what he actually knows.
5. Shikamaru Overcomes Raw Power With His Intelligence

Shikamaru from Naruto is proof that you don’t need to be the strongest fighter to be the most valuable one.
