Given how high the expectations were, Episode 9 didn’t really show us any twists and turns. Rather, it was a bit of a slow episode, to my surprise. Like, coming from the previous Oshi no Ko episode, I thought things would surely get darker, as Aqua might confront Kamiki head-on.
Well, that sure will happen, but it may take longer to build things up further. In Episode 9, though, not much new information gets revealed. It delved more into the hardships of making Ai’s biopic a reality. The episode also explained from scratch how the film industry works.
Getting the collaborators to agree is a real tough nut to crack. Since this is a risky (even controversial) project, many companies aren’t willing to sponsor the movie. But at least one was. Also, it was interesting how Yura’s death wasn’t even mentioned! Like, no one really knows what happened to her? But now the question is: who will play Ai’s role?

Out of the few interesting teases I saw in the episode, the one that hyped me up the most was obviously Ai giving the 15-year-old DVD recordings to director Gotanda. Like, I have no idea what to make of it. It’s as if Ai knew all along what was about to happen next.
Recording these two separate DVDs for her children, Aqua and Ruby, sure had some sinister planning behind it. I mean, on the surface Ai had always looked like this innocent prodigy actor. But after the previous few episodes and this one, her flashbacks are giving me the icks!
I even have a wild theory that she might have pulled most of the strings behind everything that happened in the past. Or it could even be that she wanted to leave proof of what happened to her for the future. But still, why particularly for Aqua and Ruby? What was she thinking? The upcoming episodes will surely shed some light on it.
The Search for the Lead Role in Ai’s Biopic Is in Motion
The other interesting case in today’s Oshi no Ko episode was when Arima found out that Aqua had broken up with Akane. Well, Kana fans must be on cloud nine right now, as if this is their chance! But Aqua has no business meddling with minuscule matters like that.
He must search for the perfect role to play as Ai. Coincidentally, Gotanda gets to meet Ruby in the episode, and obviously, after their short exchange, Gotanda gets convinced that Ruby must play Ai. Not just for her genes, but even her situation makes her the right choice.
But producer Kaburagi has other plans. He wants Frill to play the role. Why? Not because Ruby is worse at acting or anything, but she doesn’t have the stardom. And if Aqua wants the movie to reach a large audience, the lead role must be played by someone already popular.
That said, Frill is also not satisfied with being compared to Ruby. I mean, she does have her pride, you know. So she brings Ruby and even Akane for an acting face-off. The winner will get to play the lead role. Now what do I say? Honestly, though, I think Akane might be a better fit to play Ai’s role, as proven before, but the stars are aligning for Ruby!

Though the episode wasn’t up to my expectations story-wise, visually, it wasn’t any less than the previous episodes. Some of the episode’s soundtracks, especially during Ai’s flashback scene, were otherworldly, which I really loved. Given that Aqua is expected to play Kamiki’s role in the movie, the plot is sure to get heated soon enough. And this episode was only the beginning, so I can’t rate it much lower.
Oshi no Ko Season 3 is currently airing on Crunchyroll.
