The two recently released horror movies of 2026, Obsession and Backrooms, have turned out to be huge box-office successes. Made on micro-budgets, both have become the unexpected giants that are still going steady in cinemas. The two films were directed by young, budding filmmakers Curry Barker and Kane Parsons, respectively.
Obsession goes past major box office milestone while Backrooms nears it
Curry Barker’s recent feature has zoomed past $300 million at the box office. On the other hand, Kane Parsons’ film is close to hitting that milestone.
Obsession hit theaters on May 15 and was already having a dream run at the box office before Backrooms entered the game on May 29. The audience was drawn to fresh concepts brought by young directors. This led to packed theaters for both movies.
Obsession, which was reportedly made on a low budget of less than a million, opened with $17 million. Moving forward with great response from both critics and moviegoers, it now stands at $215 million at the domestic box office. Its total collection currently is $333.2 million (via Box Office Mojo).
Meanwhile, Backrooms, backed by A24, reportedly had a budget under $10 million. But the movie dominated the box office with an explosive opening weekend collection of $81 million (via Variety). At present, Backrooms has made over $175 million at the domestic box office. Its worldwide collections amount to $272 million and are expected to grow.
However, the two horror movies face competition from big productions like The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as the recently released Toy Story 5. Moreover, Supergirl is set to hit theaters next. Thus, it becomes another challenge for both films.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movies have also received satisfactory scores from critics and audiences. Obsession has a 94 percent critics’ rating on the platform. On the other hand, Backrooms currently has an 87 percent score on the Tomatometer.
