The episode starts with Ryumon announcing that the Seii government was overthrown a month ago and is now a dictatorship. Following that, Ryumon asks Fuji to allow deployment of the Borderland General Corps at the front as soon as possible. However, Denki interrupts him by saying that the report is fake and he must not allow Ryumon’s deployment. Meanwhile, one of the court guards interrupts them with urgent news.
Denki’s son, Totsuga Taira, the Grand Archivist, walks into the court and informs that a man named Muuton Nagoa, the Chief Negotiator of Seii and the Governor of Kaga Province, has decided to surrender to Yamato. Soon after, Totsuga also suggested that Fuji send soldiers and supplies to Kaga and seize the opportunity immediately.
While Ryumon tried to resist and object, Denki and Totsuga had already convinced a scared Fuji, who agreed to send troops and walked away. Deki additionally pressures Ryumon to keep an eye on Totsuga while they are in Kaga.

Back at The Borderland General Corps, Kaku and Ryumon bring the others up to the plan of action in their expedition towards Kaga. However, the chief clerk, Kinta Morimiya, suddenly flipped a switch and suggested that they should surrender and form an alliance with Seii and abandon Yamato, simply because Seii’s commander, Ohga Wajima, was a nice person.
Kaku quickly swoops in on the situation and breaks the suggestion methodically, proving how everything was a planned coy by Ohga to deceive her people. With the defection idea out of the way, Ryumon sentenced Morimiya to exile for conspiracy, while the others who sided with him were pardoned.
The Borderland General Corps Marches to Kaga as the War Begins
Once the Morimiya matter was settled, Ryumon and Kaku began their journey with 30,000 regular soldiers from the Borderland General Corps to Kaga. Meanwhile, Misumi and Asama were instructed to stay back in Yamato and hold guard at the headquarters. While Asama was pretty agitated with the idea of being left behind, Misumi explained that there must be a deeper plan behind it.
The episode then concludes with the Boderland General Corps leaving the town under Ryumon and Kaku’s orders, but not before Kaku had one last chat with Misumi. Before the end credits rolled in, it was revealed that the time was year 60 of the Yamato Era, when Aoteru Misumi was 18 years old.
Nippon Sangoku Episode 5 Final Verdict

Coming to the nitpicking of the anime episode, there’s not much to say other than it was “brilliant”. There was no over-the-top drama or action sequence, and they even kept the comedy really tame, which was perfect, as this was supposed to be a serious and narratively enriching episode. The anime is already a big name this season, and this episode just added to its earned reputation.
Coming to Studio Kafka, they never fail to amaze us with their animation style and quality in the series. Despite being a very new name in the industry and only a couple of years under its belt, the studio is surely starting to cement itself with the brilliant and consistent animation every week with the Nippon Sangoku series, and Episode 5 was no different.
