The next phase of the MCU will reportedly borrow a familiar DCU plot point.
The MCU is currently in its sixth stage, which will conclude in 2027 with Avengers: Secret Wars. While the official titles for any projects that are part of Phase 7 have yet to be announced, it’s highly expected that the MCU will begin focusing on mutants and X-Men-related characters after that.
What DCU plot point will the MCU’s next phase reportedly use?
According to Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus, Marvel has big plans for the Department of Damage Control (DODC) in the near future. The organization, which was formally introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming, serves as a “failsafe cleanup crew and tech storage agency” that was originally operating under the command of Tony Stark. After Tony died in Avengers: Endgame, the DODC has since been dedicated to closely surveilling “meta-enhanced individuals.”
“According to sources, the DODC have expanded their search beyond the usual superheroes we have seen in movies and shows and have actually begun taking in individuals who have shown superhuman or meta abilities behind the scenes,” the report reads. “These individuals are being placed in the Damage Control Supermax Prison, where they can be monitored and even experimented on without any jurisdiction or oversight. According to sources, we are expected to see this facility again in Wonder Man, where their ultimate goal will be to apprehend Simon Williams and lock him up there.”
Perez further states that the DODC will morph into an anti-mutant enforcement agency in the MCU’s Phase 7, and that they will focus on apprehending “any superhuman seen to be using their powers without any legal authority or oversight, which in their eyes will be anyone who isn’t on The Avengers.”
This is similar to a major storyline that is happening in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. In that universe, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. has made it his mission to rid the planet of any metahumans he believes to be dangerous — which appears to be pretty much any and all metahumans. In Peacemaker Season 2, Rick collaborated with Lex Luthor to create a prison planet, Salvation, where he intends to send these “dangerous” metahumans.
This is just a rumor at this time, and it should be treated as such, as fans will likely have to wait a bit before they find out what Marvel Studios has in store for them in Phase 7.
