In an attempt to be more transparent with players, Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead is spilling the beans on its internal workings, all over the kitchen floor. In doing so, it has also admitted that the team has been a bit too focused on pushing out content.
In the first part of their “Diving into the Development Team” series, Production Director Alex Bolle gives fans a sneak peek behind the curtain at how each update, or as he calls them, “arc,” is created. He wants to perfect the recipe because sometimes:
Preparing an arc is a recipe that we’re always trying to improve, sometimes it’s too salty, sometimes it needs more salt. We’re constantly trying to improve the live service experience.
Let’s dive into how Bolle and his team want to perfect the recipe with players on their side.

Bolle’s metaphor about “too salty, too spicy, sometimes needs more salt” perfectly sums up the current state of Helldivers 2. He then went on to explain how each arc (basically big update in the game) comes to life.
He stated: Each arc starts out as a fantasy with a very specific but very important question: ‘What do we want players to experience?‘ And from there, it becomes the task of the other team to bring it together as a mix of features, missions, and warbonds.

But while explaining, Bolle admitted that for a long time, the team forgot to bring the necessary balance required in any dish. The game had too many flashy ingredients to disrupt the experience, and not enough refinement.
Bolle even joked, “I’m from Corsica, I love spices,” but it’s clear that Arrowhead’s realizing seasoning matters as much as the ingredients used in the recipe.
So what’s the final takeaway? Future arcs will focus not only on new content but also on quality-of-life improvements and live-service stability that they are currently doing (after ignoring fans’ requests for weeks).
With fewer rushed contents, hopefully content has ‘flavor’ with balance for the whole meal. Because it’s not the quality of the ingredient that’s bad here; it’s the plate that has a hole, dropping the meatballs players want to eat.

This new approach isn’t just about simple metaphors or memes; it aims to bring a whole new strategy for the game. If things happen according to the, it will give the team more time to polish the game and avoid burning themselves (and the players) out.
By planning arcs with better pacing and cleaner goals in mind, Arrowhead can keep Helldivers 2 technically stable without letting the community explode every other update cycle. The team is calling this the start of a more manageable live-service rhythm, but let’s see if this builds anticipation rather than panic.
And since this is only Part 1 of the “Diving into the Development Team” series, it seems this was just our first course. Arrowhead is preparing Part 2, which will blow us away as it will dive into the engine team and the intriguingly named “Ministry of Truth.”
So, if you can’t handle spice very much, bring some chocolate and milk along, because it sounds like the next dish on the menu might be even spicier.
Will Arrowhead talk about upgrading its game engine in Part 2? Or is it too much to ask right now? Comment below to let us know.
