Doctor Who’s 2026 Christmas special hangs in the balance over one major problem. BBC bosses revealed growing concerns about casting the next Time Lord ahead of the holiday season.
Doctor Who’s 2026 Christmas Special rumored to be scrapped
The Doctor Who Christmas special faces cancellation because BBC bosses cannot find anyone to play the Time Lord, The Sun reports. The most recent series ended last May with star Ncuti Gatwa departing the role. Viewers had expressed anger at what they called woke storylines during his tenure.
Lindsay Salt, BBC Director of Drama, announced the festive special seven months ago. She said at the time, “The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas.” Salt also confirmed that writer Russell T Davies had agreed to pen the 2026 Christmas episode.
However, the search for a new lead has stalled with less than seven months until air. An insider revealed the core issue facing the production team. They said, “They have found it difficult to find anyone who’ll take on the part of the 16th Time Lord.” The source added this reluctance stems partly from the baggage associated with the most recent series.
Meanwhile, bosses are reportedly exploring an alternative plan for the franchise. They are now turning to Billie Piper to take centre stage in a potential special episode. Piper famously played the Doctor’s companion Rose during the show’s earlier revival era. This alternative project would reportedly air at Easter 2027 rather than Christmas 2026.
The insider also raised concerns about the quality of any rushed production. They warned, “There are fears that even if they do manage to pull something together, it is going to be a poor cousin to previous Christmas specials.”
The source noted that past festive episodes have always been adored by fans. Despite earlier executive reassurances, no confirmation about a new full series has emerged either. The BBC declined to comment on the report.
