The Odyssey will come as a disappointment for fans of Tom Holland and Zendaya. The power couple, who have been co-stars in five films so far, including the Spider-Man films, have to comply with a creative decision that might let down fans.
Christopher Nolan‘s directorial also stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal in key roles, among others. It follows Damon’s Odysseus, the legendary Greek warrior of Ithaca, as he embarks on a long and arduous journey back home to his wife Penelope after the decade-long Trojan war.

The Odyssey will mark the first time in five films that Tom Holland and Zendaya, despite being co-stars, will not be seen sharing screen space together. However, this isn’t just a creative decision by the makers. This is because the film closely follows Homer’s epic poem of the same name.
Revealed by GQ in its piece about the making process of The Odyssey, excerpts read, “Zendaya is also in The Odyssey; she and Holland do not share any scenes, though Holland “went to set her first day of work because I just wanted to be there,” he said.”

It was also revealed that Holland had to coordinate with Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman before committing to The Odyssey, due to overlapping production schedules. Rothman reportedly agreed out of respect not only for Holland but also for Nolan.
Speaking about the decision by Rothman to push back Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland said, “I think one of the reasons why Sony was happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over, and we aren’t actually going to lose Tom for two years.’ Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.” Christopher Nolan reportedly started production on time and finished shooting the film nine days early.
The Odyssey is slated to release in theaters on July 17, 2026.
