While Mel Gibson‘s The Passion of the Christ exited Netflix in the US just ahead of Easter weekend, the divisive movie, which grossed $610 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), is currently dominating the charts worldwide. According to Flix Patrol, the movie ranked number 10 on the streamer’s global Top 10 Movies list on April 5, joining more recent releases like Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man and War Machine.What makes this feat all the more impressive is that it breached the Top 10 chart despite not being available to stream in the US. The movie even reached number 1 in several countries on April 5, including Guatemala, Lebanon, Mexico, Salvador, and Nicaragua.

How to Watch Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ in the US?

On paper, it would have made sense for The Passion of the Christ to remain on Netflix in the U.S. through the Easter weekend, given that, despite its divisive nature, it likely would have drawn strong viewership as reflected by its worldwide success.
However, it’s important to note that this isn’t an uncommon phenomenon, as a bulk of the movies’ availability on the streamer boils down to licensing agreements, and it’s common for them to cycle in and out of the catalog. Unfortunately, the Mel Gibson movie is currently not available to stream on any major platform in the US.
But viewers can still watch it through the Wonder Project channel on Amazon Prime Video, which is priced at $8.99 per month and offers a free trial, or rent/purchase it via other VOD services like Apple TV and Amazon.

Amid the original’s resurgence on streaming, it’s also worth highlighting that Gibson is currently involved with the production of a sequel titled The Resurrection of the Christ, which has been split into a two-part duology. More importantly, Jim Caviezel won’t be returning as Jesus in the new movie due to his age, and Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will be taking the reins in the follow-up.
As for what to expect, Gibson, who penned the script alongside his brother Donal Gibson and longtime collaborator Randall Wallace, previously described the narrative as a non-linear, metaphysical acid trip (via JRE).
I’m hoping next year sometime. There’s a lot required because it is, I’ll just tell you this, it’s an acid trip. When we wrote it, I’ve never read anything like it. My brother and I and [screenwriter Randall Wallace] all sort of congregated on this, so there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff.
With Gibson seemingly taking more creative liberty with the follow-up, it’ll be interesting to see how the movie is received once Part 1 of the intended duology debuts on Good Friday next year.
