With 2026’s Disclosure Day marking Steven Spielberg’s return to his extraterrestrial roots, there is some speculation to be had about whether the same would be the case for horror. In addition to being a prominent contributor to the blockbuster and sci-fi landscape, he’s also a proven master in the realm of horror. From building an unrelenting sense of terror in Jaws to penning the suburban nightmare in Poltergeist, few are capable of matching his knack for creating dread and suspense.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem the auteur will be jumping back to his horror roots anytime soon after watching Weapons. This isn’t because Zach Cregger‘s 2025 hit was appalling, quite the opposite, as Spielberg has offered nothing but praise for the movie.
Weapons Scratched Steven Spielberg’s Itch for Horror
Steven Spielberg did consider the idea of jumping back into horror in recent years. However, the great track record of the genre in recent months has already satisfied his itch, especially Weapons.
Speaking of the movie, which scored an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress, following Amy Madigan’s immaculate turn as Aunt Gladys, Spielberg expressed that it scratched his itch to delve into the horror realm because of how great it was (via Empire Magazine).
I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch. When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I need to scratch. I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me want to make a horror film that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.
There’s no denying that 2025 was a homerun for horrors, and given how satisfying Weapons proved to be, the movie has dwindled Spielberg’s desire to jump back into horrors.

It’s important to note that the auteur hasn’t denounced the prospect of someday returning to horrors, and even at 78, the auteur isn’t planning on slowing down anytime soon.
Back in 2023, Spielberg added that he wants to keep on learning and discovering, and someday get back to scary movies, something he hasn’t worked on in decades. Although it could be a long wait before we see a true Spielberg horror again, especially with Cregger returning this year with his Resident Evil movie, given the auteur’s longevity, one shouldn’t rule out the possibility (via KIK FM).
I feel a little alarmed to be told I’ve lived a lifetime because I’m not finished. I want to keep working. I want to keep learning and discovering and scaring the sh** out of myself and sometimes the sh** out of you. I gotta get back to some of those earlier scary movies but that’s another story for later on.
Here is hoping that, down the line, Spielberg will be motivated enough to make a horror movie himself. For now, fans can expect Disclosure Day to scratch their itch for more Spielberg sci-fi movies.
