When it comes to the main plot, I had been expecting Episode 5 to deliver more, but not much of significance really happened. Instead, today’s Oshi no Ko episode focused on building up what is probably another big plot thread involving Kana Arima. In fact, the whole episode was dedicated to her.
Still, if I have to divide the episode into two major segments, the first would be the Akane part, where her main goal was revealed. But later on, the bigger chunk of the episode was spent setting up Kana’s redemption arc, or at least what initially seemed like a redemption arc. However, in the very last few seconds, things took a drastic turn!
Can Akane Prevent Aqua & Hikaru from Meeting Each Other

First of all, let’s start with what threw me off the most in the episode. Didn’t I say before that Akane could simply tell Aqua the real identity of his biological father now? However, Akane decides not to let Aqua know anything about this and instead takes the matter into her own hands.
Although I was initially a bit confused about why she would do that, her explanation made a lot of sense. It’s actually quite simple. If she lets Aqua find out about Hikaru, then he would not even be able to report him to the police. Because when Ai got pregnant, Hikaru was only 15!
So, Ai would likely be the one facing all the allegations. Which, honestly, is also an interesting aspect that we might not know much about. What if there is actually some truth to this assumption, and Hikaru was not really the one at the root of all the problems?
Whatever the case, if Aqua comes into contact with Hikaru, then Akane fears he will dirty his own hands to get revenge. And since Akane is the best girl in the series, she would never let the person she loves get his hands bloody. So now, she is preparing to deal with this in her own way.
Kana’s Naiveness Might Put B-Komachi in Deep Trouble Now
Following Akane’s part, we get a glimpse of B-Komachi’s current situation. Things are tense here as well. And who is getting sidelined the most because of Ruby’s grand plan? It is Kana. But even she knows Ruby is not exactly at fault and that she needs to make a breakthrough on her own. So she decides to somehow return to the film industry.
After accepting that she never really wanted to be an idol in the first place, she meets a buzzing film director, Shima Masanori. However, her biggest mistake here was not telling anyone in B-Komachi about it. Why? Let’s get into detail about what happened in the episode.
If Kana gets serious, she can surely become a bigger star than Ruby or even Akane. I say this with a grain of salt, but it might not be far from the truth. So her first attempt to contact the director is successful. Maybe a little too successfully, to a fault.
Even their personal exchanges and filmmaking philosophy align so well that Kana starts to believe Shima is harmless. And honestly, he pretty much seems harmless so far. Even when Kana goes to his studio, he does not immediately do anything.
Instead, he only tries to see if Kana is actually serious about returning to show business. I mean, I would say the director’s attempt to find that out was questionable, but this is how this line of work usually operates. Because guess what? It totally seemed like she was almost losing her V-card there, but poor Kana; she still cannot forget about Aqua!
Oshi no Ko Season 3 Episode “Casting”: Final Verdict

Of course, as always, the animation and direction of episode 5 were phenomenal. Especially, the final cliffhanger totally threw me off guard. When Kana was leaving Shima’s studio the next morning, someone secretly took her photo from a car. Now, that does not seem good at all, does it? So, in the next episode, this could turn into a bigger conundrum that might damage B-Komachi’s reputation altogether!
Oshi no Ko Season 3 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
