X-Men icons like Wolverine and Storm have traveled back to the 1980s in Marvel’s new variant covers. Marvel has announced a refreshing makeover for six major X-Men characters.
What do the X-Men 1980s makeovers look like?
Marvel Comics has revealed a brand new variant cover series that gives X-Men characters such as Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, Colossus, Mystique, and Magik a vibrant appearance based on the 1980s timeline. The new designs have been illustrated by acclaimed artist Alexander Lozano.
The retro-inspired artwork gives the fan-favorite heroes vibrant 1980s-inspired looks. Check out some of the upcoming 1980s variant covers for the X-Men below:

The official description for the retro variant cover series reads, “Capturing the decade of arcades, synth and bold fashion, Lozano’s artwork spotlights Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Rogue, Magik, and Mystique in totally rad, ‘80s inspired looks dripping with attitude! The six covers will be featured on issues of X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men United, and Wolverine throughout July and August.”
“I discovered my love for the X-Men back in the 1980s,” said artist Lozano on the new variant covers. “I thought it only fair to put my beloved X-Men through their greatest test of all: the Uncanny ‘80s fashion!!!”
This announcement comes around the same time as X-Men: Outback. It’s a recently released brand-new retro series by Steve Orlando and Stephen Segovia. The comic series revisits an era when the X-Men operated out of the Australian Outback.
Marvel revealed the 1980s-inspired variant covers ahead of X-Men ’97 Season 2’s debut, which is just around the corner. The Disney+ animated TV series will return on July 1, 2026.
As for the 1980s variant cover series, it will go on sale starting with the Uncanny X-Men #32, featuring Rogue, on July 22, 2026. The sixth and final cover, X-Men United #6, featuring Mystique, will be released on August 12, 2026.
