The marketing campaign for Avengers: Doomsday has already kicked off, and one of the teasers offered a glimpse at Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor, seemingly hinting at his eventual face-off against Robert Downey Jr‘s Doctor Doom. While it remains to be seen how the Russo brothers handle the God of Thunder’s clash with Doom onscreen, the comics have already delivered some exhilarating battles between the two figures, most notably in Thor #6.
Power scaling, especially in the realm of comics, can be a little absurd at times, and the issue in question doesn’t shy away from leaning into that excess. Both Thor and Doom fight at the height of their capabilities in a war that stretches across nearly a century.
Inside Doctor Doom and Thor’s 99-Year War
The story takes place at the end of time, featuring All-Father Thor, who is responsible for the resurrection of Earth after it was destroyed. Doom, however, intends to bring the world back to rest, which prompts the God of Thunder, alongside Old Man Phoenix, to come to Earth’s defence against Doom, who possesses the power of Starbrand, Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, and the Sorcerer Supreme.

Following Doom’s overwhelming powers, Wolverine urges Thor to wield the Phoenix Force while sacrificing himself, which leads to a brutal war that lasts for 99 years. The decades-long war at the core of the Earth triggers several cataclysmic volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, reshaping the myths surrounding the Earth. And All-Father Thor does come out victorious after decades of bloodshed before falling to eternal sleep himself.
Is it over the top? Absolutely. Is it fun? also yes, especially for fans obsessed with power scaling, as the story elevates both the God of Thunder and Marvel’s biggest villain to extreme heights in a tale of hope against nihilism at the end of time.
Avengers: Doomsday Needs to Redeem Thor Onscreen
While it’s highly unlikely we’d get something of this scale in the upcoming multiversal battle against Doom, the teaser for Thor’s return in Doomsday does suggest a return to the character’s roots.

The MCU has been subject to intense scrutiny for its handling of Thor post-Endgame after Love and Thunder seemingly undid years of character development by resorting to excessive humor. With Thor now gearing up to face the multiversal threat, coupled with the added responsibility of being a surrogate father to Love, the trailer‘s more somber tone lends weight to the idea that the MCU may be course-correcting on that front.
Whether Doomsday will deliver on that front remains to be seen. But with the OG crew reuniting for the biggest event post-Endgame, hopefully, the Russo brothers won’t drop the ball for what could be Hemsworth’s last stretch as Thor.
