Netflix’s Emily in Paris has officially been confirmed for a sixth season, with a playful renewal video on Instagram, showing star Lily Collins blowing out a “6” candle atop a croissant, signaling Emily Cooper’s stylish return to the City of Light. While fans celebrate, there is one other unresolved bureaucratic question that has been keeping them confused: when does Emily’s visa actually expire?
Across the show’s five seasons, Emily’s French work situation has been touched on rather sporadically. In Season 3, Sylvie helps her secure a French work visa. But the series has never clearly defined how long she can legally stay in France.
Once the work visa is approved, she gains a secure footing in the country, but there is no mention of how long it is valid or what the renewal date is. Although the show’s timeline is fuzzy, it seems she might be on her way to permanent residency.
This has led to fan speculation, but the show continues not to talk about it. However, she has definitely been in Paris long enough for her visa to matter. To keep the show more grounded, Netflix should address this issue in the next season.
How Long Has Emily Been In Paris?
This is a question that is up for debate, since it is rather tricky to know how long exactly Emily has been in the City of Love. The series premiered on October 2, 2020, with Emily arriving from Chicago to start her Parisian adventure. Since then, Emily in Paris has spanned five seasons, but the in-show passage of time doesn’t match real-world years.
While there isn’t a clear chronology, Entertainment Tonight recently asked the same question to the cast and crew of Emily in Paris. Well, here is how each of them answered:
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie): I’d say like two or three years. Maybe three, ‘cause we’ve had summers. No, maybe two. Two.William Abadie (Antoine): It’s so funny, you should mention that, because I had an argument with a colleague of mine, I was like ‘It’s been four years!’ She was like, ‘No, it’s been four months!’Ashley Park (Mindy): For me, I think between the first two seasons and then the next two, it was only like a couple days. And I think that that was over the course of beginning of spring into end of summer. And then we had our winter. I think it’s only been a year.
While it seems plausible that it might have been somewhere between a year and two, others like Lily Collins had vastly different answers.
Lily Collins (Emily): It is a timeless loop. You know what, it’s a beautiful, aspirational, stunning show that I think time is just. It’s just a construct. Who cares?Darren Star (creator): All I can say is time is elastic. Time is elastic and very subjective.Arnaud Binard (Laurent): The vision of Darren [Star] is such a, some sort of a fantasy, you know? So, yeah, it’s timeless.
The show itself never spells out how much time has passed, and parts of seasons seem to leap around, but judging from these vastly contrasting options, it seems highly likely that it has been two years since Emily set foot in the city.
Still, given the show’s loose approach to time, it is impossible to figure out the exact number of years Emily has spent in Paris unless the creator directly reveals it. Till then, the question remains up for debate, and so does her visa status.
When is Emily in Paris Season 6 Releasing?

Netflix has renewed Emily in Paris for a sixth season following its strong performance. The fifth season debuted in second position on Netflix’s Top 10 list with over 13.5 million views within the first four days and continued the position for a week (via Variety).
However, despite that confirmation of the show’s return, no official premiere date for Season 6 has been announced yet. Industry expectations based on the series’ historical release suggest that an early or late 2027 release window is likely, but only if production starts soon after the renewal announcement.
The fifth season ended with Emily and Marcello breaking up after he decided to stay in Italy. Emily goes back to Paris, where she reconnects with Gabriel, who invites her to Greece. This means Emily might be in another country in Season 6 after her Italian adventure in Season 5.
