January 7, 2026, marks the 62nd birthday of legendary actor and energetic performer Nicolas Cage. Known to the younger generation as the man who played Ghost Rider, Nicolas Cage’s filmography expands far and wide beyond the skull-on-fire guy.

Calling his acting skills Nouveau Shamanic, Cage has often talked about how he would rather be an experience inside the screen rather than an ordinary man living a lie (acting).

From living all alone in a haunted castle to portraying the role of a Carpenter in The Carpenter’s Son, here are six iconic Nicolas Cage masterpiece movies that you would have seen if you call yourself a Nicolas Cage fan.

6. Ghost Rider

The movie that made Nicolas Cage famous to the younger generation, Ghost Rider, was an iconic movie that was released back in 2007 and starred Cage in the titular role.

Being a character from Marvel Comics (before the MCU was even established), Ghost Rider had a whole other vibe where things were actually serious, and the deal with the Devil landed stuntman Johnny Blaze in deep trouble.

Worried from souls, guilt, redemption, and criminals in a crime-ridden city, Nicolas Cage was the charming stuntman in the day, but turned into a vengeful spirit during the night, and he was purely maniacal. The film received some disappointing reviews upon its release, but Cage as Ghost Rider is something that fans want even to this day.

5. Pig

When Pig was announced starring Nicolas Cage, everyone thought it would be yet another crazy Cage adventure where he goes John-Wick style to go and reclaim his pig.

Instead, throughout the entire film, Cage gives a poignant performance that is a silent meditation on grief and the art of cooking. Living in the woods alongside his foraging pig, Rob (Nic Cage) hunts truffles and sells them through his friend.

However, when his pig gets kidnapped, Rob returns to Portland and confronts his past, all the while searching for his prized pig, whom he wants to see purely out of love. The movie’s ambiance, its quiet nature, and the plot broke the Nicolas Cage stereotype of being a wild man with varied facial expressions.

Instead, Cage was simply silent, mournful, and calm, but it was in this calmness that Cage spoke the most. Thus, Pig is a wonderful movie for fans of Nicolas Cage who want to see the actor take on a restrained challenge.

4. Face/Off

Often called the peak of Nicolas Cage’s acting skills, Face/Off is an iconic 1997 movie, and only Cage (and John Travolta) could have pulled off this crazy plot.

Cage portrays the role of a terrorist who swaps his face with that of John Travolta (who portrays an FBI Agent). Much to everyone’s surprise, Travolta does the same and swaps his face with that of Cage.

Of course, the two didn’t surgically swap faces, but Nicolas Cage had to act out the entire film as himself through the mannerisms of John Travolta (and vice versa). The movie is a high-octane action opera with plenty of slow-motion gunfights and exploding boats, making it a perfect Nic Cage flick.

Credit where credit is due, Cage perfectly captures Travolta’s mannerisms, making the film grounded instead of an absurd sci-fi movie, and of course, any self-stylized Nic Cage fan would have surely seen this classic flick.

3. Raising Arizona

A comedy crime drama film, Raising Arizona, was the first time that the world saw Nicolas Cage’s “wilder” side. Portraying the role of H.I. McDunnough, an ex-convict, the film is directed by the Coen Brothers.

Wanting to adopt a baby but unable to due to his past, Nic Cage and Holly Hunter decided to… borrow one from a family of quintuplets.

Cage’s performance in this movie is pure kinetic energy. From his iconic “Woody Woodpecker” hair to his poetic, southern-friend narration, he anchored the film that is otherwise considered absurd. Being the first time the world saw Cage’s ability to ground a film with his mannerisms, it’s a high-speed chase of a movie that still feels fresh decades later.

2. Adaptation

Another absurd film by the mind of Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze, Adaptation. features Cage in a dual role as twin brothers: The neurotic, self-loathing Charlie Kaufman and the breezy, blissfully ignorant Donald Kaufman.

The film showcased Cage’s ability to explore the duality of the creative spirit. His ability to differentiate the two characters through subtle shifts in posture, vocal pitch, and eye contact is a masterclass in craft.

It is a movie about making a movie, but it’s also an exploration of loneliness and the desire to be “original” in a world that rewards it. The actor received his second Oscar nomination for this movie, and many critics agree that it is his most technically perfect performance to date.

1. Leaving Las Vegas

Before he was an action star or an internet meme, Nicolas Cage was a heavyweight. Leaving Las Vegas, released in 1995, showcased Cage’s raw and dramatic power as the actor portrayed a serious role of Ben.

Directed by Mike Figgis, the film follows Ben Sanderson, a Hollywood screenwriter who has lost everything to alcoholism. His plan involves driving to Las Vegas and drinking himself to death, but he meets Sara, a prostitute, and moves in with her.

The film is a poignant exploration of sadness. Despite the character’s self-destructive path, Cage makes him impossibly human.

Leaving Las Vegas won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, and it remains one of the most harrowing portrayals of addiction ever put to film.
