Fans can expect to get a new season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms every year, that is, if the trend on the prequel show’s release date remains consistent.
We know that Season 2 has already been confirmed, as per Deadline, and according to showrunner Ira Parker, during his interview via Collider, there’s a plan to adapt all existing Tales of Dunk and Egg books.
When I heard that it was going to be six episodes and they wanted to do shorter half-hour episodes, I was like, ‘Great.’ That means we can do one novella a season.
So far, George R.R. Martin has published three novellas, namely The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. He plans to write more, but for now, it seems like we might get three seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Season 1 premieres on January 18, 2026, while Season 2 is slated for a 2027 release. This means that if production goes smoothly, Season 3 will potentially arrive sometime in 2028. Of course, HBO has yet to make an announcement.

At this point, Martin is juggling everything instead of devoting his whole attention to The Winds of Winter. In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, he revealed he’s also writing another Dunk and Egg novella:
Every time I announce something on the internet, there’s all this crazy talk. ‘Oh, he’s giving up writing the books!’ But I’m still writing. The [sixth] novel, the ‘Dunk and Egg’ story — those are what I’m focused on.
He previously expressed the intention to write more stories; in fact, he has plans to add six more installments, taking the franchise to a total of nine novellas. If the prequel show becomes a massive success, Martin would need to expedite his writing on the next Tales of Dunk and Egg books.
Unfortunately, he plans to accomplish this after he’s done with The Winds of Winter. He once wrote on his blog that he would “slip in a new Dunk & Egg between each of those in my copious spare time,” referring to A Dream of Spring and Fire & Blood.
HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Gears Up For Season 2
Ahead of Season 1’s premiere, Martin confirmed via Collider that “they’re working on the second season.” He has been praising the prequel series since last year, revealing on his blog that he has seen all episodes and he’s happy with the outcome.
With Season 2 now moving forward, it only goes to show the confidence that HBO has in the series. As part of the Game of Thrones franchise and one of Martin’s favorite works of all time, fans are assured that returning to Westeros will be much more fun and enjoyable this time.
