Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for the premiere episode of Lioness season 3.
Zoe Saldaña has opened up about the intense, heart-pounding events of the Lioness Season 3 premiere, which kicked off with a brutal ambush that placed her character, Joe McNamara, in severe peril. Speaking to People Magazine, following the episode’s debut, Saldaña reflected on the immense physical and emotional burden Joe faces as foreign operatives and personal betrayals collide in Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed Paramount+ CIA thriller.
Talking about Joe’s kidnapping scene, which includes everything from being pepper-sprayed to getting brutally attacked, she said:
I mean, for Joe, it feels like it’s a Taco Tuesday. I’m telling you, these are the things that happen to this poor woman because of the world that she has chosen for herself and the vocation that she has taken upon herself to fulfill in her life.
Created by Taylor Sheridan, the hit Paramount+ spy thriller returns with its highest stakes yet, forcing the CIA operative to defend her family on home turf. Saldaña emphasized that this terrifying confrontation fundamentally changes Joe’s trajectory for the rest of the season, setting up a dark, high-stakes fight for survival where no place remains safe.

In the explosive Season 3 opener, Joe’s double life comes crashing down when masked intruders breach her family’s sanctuary. Unlike the controlled environments of foreign covert ops, the sudden ambush leaves Joe stripped of her usual military support, relying entirely on raw instinct to protect her loved ones.
Reflecting on filming the brutal sequence, Saldaña revealed how deeply the scene affected her performance and her character’s mindset moving forward. She also talks about how Nicole Kidman‘s character, Caitlyn Meade, plays an important role in Joe’s life. She explained:
You know, she respects and admires and looks up to Caitlyn in such a strong way. And she knows how devoted Caitlyn is to her country, and honestly, it’s what drives Joe.
And also the fear of never wanting to let Caitlyn down or get anybody killed, especially a Lioness, is what keeps Joe always waking up every morning and giving the best of herself. It always comes at the cost of putting herself in danger, and now danger has knocked on our door, unfortunately
Saldaña highlighted how Kidman’s character becomes both a shield and a source of friction for Joe. While Caitlyn fights to maintain funding and operational authority, Joe’s raw grief threatens to derail their fragile alliance, setting the stage for an intense internal power struggle throughout the new season.
With the CIA program exposed and internal trust shattered, Season 3 promises an uncompromising look at espionage and leadership under fire. As Joe attempts to rebuild her unit, the lingering consequences of the opening attack at the premiere will echo in every decision she makes moving forward.
