In a recent interview with Andre Pilli (via @andrepilli on YouTube), the series’s Director of Photography, Adriano Goldman, candidly revealed that the production is grappling with “brutal” filming conditions and an incredibly grueling schedule. He said:
You have to shoot really fast, and the faster you go, the more you compromise quality. There’s no way around it, right? Obviously, we have a lot of resources, but it’s brutal. The kids’ screen time is really brutal.
The main cast consists of young children who must split their days between acting and mandatory schooling, and the crew is forced to shoot at a frantic pace.

Goldman broke down the strict logistics, explaining that the crew must use stand-ins to map out and “pre-shoot” entire scenes while the child actors are away in the classroom. Once the young stars finally arrive on set, the production enters a high-stakes race against the clock. He explains:
So the methodology is very specific. You practically have to pre-shoot all the scenes while they’re in class.
Then they come to the set, stay for an hour and a half, and you have to shoot six setups because they’re leaving again—and then they’ll come back in the afternoon. It’s really hard; you shoot everything out of order, right, because of that kind of scheduling. So the process is really complicated, but I’ve done one now.
Goldman noted that while Warner Bros. has provided massive resources for the television adaptation, there is simply no getting around the fact that rushing a production this fast inevitably hurts the final product.
Adapting J.K. Rowling’s beloved seven-book series (and Rowling is very much involved in the reboot, by the way) into a multi-season television show was always going to be an uphill battle, especially when trying to live up to the legacy of the original eight-part blockbuster films. Ultimately, capturing the magic of Hogwarts requires time, a luxury the crew currently does not have.
Balancing the well-being of a young cast with the monumental expectations of a global fanbase is a tightrope walk, and fans can only hope that HBO’s deep pockets will help Goldman and his team overcome these frantic filming constraints to deliver the definitive Wizarding World adaptation we’ve been waiting for. Notably, the first season will have only eight episodes, covering the Philosopher’s Stone novel from the Harry Potter book series.
