Written by You might not know the name Makoto Ueda, but you probably know his work: he was the writer of the acclaimed anime The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl as well as the cult hits Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes and River. For his directorial debut, You Are the Film, Ueda cuts from the same lo-fi sci-fi comedy cloth as Beyond and River, creating another entry in the genre that is enjoyable if not quite as strong as his prior work.
What is You Are the Film about?
You Are the Film follows two artists who each go to separate movie theaters, hoping to partake in the latest of cinema, only to discover that their lives are playing out on each other’s screen and that they can interact with one another. Reminiscent in some ways of The Truman Show, albeit with a decidedly quirky and Japanese spin, this is a movie that’s made to be fun and cute and not a lot else.

There are some funny moments in the film, albeit in a way that tends to elicit a light chuckle rather than full-on laughter. The humor in the second half of the film is what will really test the audience, though. As the plot unfolds, it goes to some weird — perhaps even ridiculous places — that seem desperate to get a laugh. Although absurdism certainly has its place, You Are the Film pushes things a bit too far. The suspension of disbelief for the core premise works, but once you add on these further layers of over-the-top, the goodwill stretches a bit thin.
However, the appeal of these films has never been that they are laugh-out-loud funny; it’s that they are clever and amusing. Much of what makes these films enjoyable is how wholeheartedly Ueda (first as writer, now as writer-director) commits to these premises and finds creative ways to put the characters into exciting and outlandish new situations.
This is made even more impressive by how economical Ueda is with his storytelling. You Are the Film is the shortest of these quirky sci-fi projects yet, with a runtime that clocks in at just over one hour. Still, Ueda manages to build and flesh out this world in a way that feels rewarding despite the somewhat limited canvas he is working with. It feels complete without feeling indulgent or overstaying its welcome, which is a difficult balance to strike in a film like this.
And although it is clear that Ueda’s directorial debut is still very much an independent film, it feels bigger than Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes or River in terms of scale, for better or worse. The story is not confined to a single location, and the latter half contains some visual effects that are well-done. But in trying harder, You Are the Film does lose a bit of the quaint charm of its cousins.
If You Are the Film does fall flat in one particular area, it is its characters, but a lot of these issues are structural. Ueda is essentially working with two disparate storylines that weave together, and to make both of these characters feel fully developed in less than an hour is a tall order — not to mention the carnival of supporting characters that each storyline has. Marika Ito and Kai Inowaki are both good (and have excellent chemistry together), allowing the film to have sufficient charm, but the investment generally stops at amusement.
Is You Are the Film worth watching?
Regardless, the sheer ambition of these lo-fi sci-fi comedies will never cease to amaze me. You Are the Film may be Makoto Ueda’s least successful work in execution, but the concept is so intriguing and the heart is so clear that it’s hard not to at least admire what he has set out to do with his directorial debut. And if he continues to make sci-fi movies like this, this writer will continue to be seated.
