War Machine 2 has received a great update. The first War Machine movie, which stars Reacher’s Alan Ritchson, was released on the Netflix streaming service earlier this year.
War Machine — not to be confused with a 2017 movie of the same name that was also released directly onto Netflix — is a recent military science fiction action film directed and co-written by Patrick Hughes. In addition to Ritchson, it stars Dennis Quaid, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Stephan James, Blake Richardson, Daniel Webber, and Keiynan Lonsdale.
“During the final stage of US Army Ranger selection, an elite team’s training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an unimaginable threat,” the synopsis reads.
What is the update on War Machine 2?
Per Deadline, it’s now been officially announced that War Machine 2 is happening at Netflix. Hughes is returning to direct and co-write the sequel with James Beaufort.
Ritchson, meanwhile, is “likely” to return for the sequel, while no other casting news has been announced.
“Since bowing on March 26, War Machine has reached 139 million views on Netflix, making it one of the 10 most popular original films to ever bow on the streamer,” Deadline’s article notes. “The film currently sits at No. 10 but has a chance to get to nine as the streamer continues to count views up until the 91-day measuring mark.”
Hughes is also on board to produce War Machine 2 alongside Todd Lieberman and Alex Young for Hidden Pictures, Rich Cook for Range Media Partners, and Greg McLean for Huge Film. Valerie Bleth Sharp will serve as an executive producer.
The sequel news is exciting, but perhaps not altogether surprising, for fans of the first movie, given how the ending of War Machine sets up a sequel. The “unimaginable threat” teased in the synopsis is actually a killer robot, and the end of the movie sees Ritchson’s character join a global mission to stop more of these robots from destroying Earth. That cliffhanger teases that there’s much more to explore in this world, meaning War Machine 2 could go in one of several directions.
A release date for War Machine 2 has not yet been announced.
