Venom fans who are hoping to see Tom Hardy return to the MCU at some point might need to brace themselves for disappointment.
Hardy played Eddie Brock/Venom in all three of Sony Pictures‘ Venom movies. These films took place in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, meaning they are not part of the MCU; however, Brock did visit the MCU’s Sacred Timeline during the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
While Venom seemingly died at the end of Venom: The Last Dance, there’s been much talk about whether or not Hardy’s Eddie will return. There doesn’t seem to be any concrete plans to continue Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after Spider-Noir, meaning Eddie may need to permanently relocate to the MCU if they intend to continue using the character.
What is the update on Venom and Tom Hardy’s return to the MCU?
According to scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus, however, fans shouldn’t hold their breath to see Hardy return to the MCU. When asked about the matter on Twitter, Perez wrote, “Not in the cards anymore from what I understand. While the symbiote will continue to have a presence post BND, it’ll eventually seek out a new host.”
The Venom symbiote’s presence in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also known as Spider-Man 4, has not been confirmed by Marvel or Sony at this time, though that’s largely because plot details for the movie remain under wraps at this time. Many have speculated the symbiote will show up in the film, as Scorpion actor Michael Mando has vaguely teased this might be happening on Instagram. Some comic readers are also guessing that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will bond with the Venom symbiote in Avengers: Secret Wars, as the original Secret Wars crossover series features the origins of Spider-Man’s black suit.
Given that a small piece of Venom was left behind in the Sacred Timeline after he was thrown back into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Marvel Studios could use the symbiote without directly involving Hardy. It is worth noting, though, that Hardy also voices Venom in the previous movies (Brad Venable does additional voiceover), meaning the role may have to be recast if they plan on having the symbiote speak.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31, 2026.
