Superman writer-director James Gunn recently shared a new look at Skyler Gisondo‘s Jimmy Olsen in the upcoming DC Universe movie.

What did James Gunn say about Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen performance in Superman?

In a post shared across his social media accounts, Gunn celebrated the anniversary of “Superman’s Best Pal Jimmy Olsen,” who was introduced on this day (April 15) in 1940 in the radio serial show The Adventures of Superman. The filmmaker, who is also co-CEO of DC Studios, also teased what fans can expect from Gisondo’s performance as Jimmy Olsen, promising that he is “gonna knock you out of your socks.”

Jimmy Olsen is one of the most well-known and recognizable characters from the Superman mythos, with the young, red-haired Daily Planet photojournalist having been typically part of most adaptations. In the Christopher Reeve-led Superman quadrilogy, as well as the Supergirl spinoff, the character was played by Marc McClure. He was also notably played by Mehcad Brooks in the Arrowverse and by Aaron Ashmore in Smallville.

Joining Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen in Superman are several other members of the Daily Planet, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Wendell Pierce is set to appear as Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet, with Beck Bennett as reporter Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as columnist Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as reporter Ron Troupe.

In a recent interview with ComingSoon Editor Brandon Schreur, Bennett teased what fans could expect from his take on Steve Lombard, revealing that he’ll be “a little bit of an adversary for everybody.” He continued, “He’s a character where, when you see him, you know what to expect, you know he’s going to be overly confident and then kind of fall flat on his face and get embarrassed. It’s really fun to play a character who is so cocky and just always ends up getting his comeuppance.”

Superman, starring David Corenswet as the titular Man of Steel, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, as the first film of the DCU.
