Steam Deck has been an immense success for Valve and the company has previously expressed its desire to bring a successor to its portable PC. However, as much as the company wants a new handheld and the players desire it, the Steam Deck 2 is not coming for a “couple of years.”
As reported by The Verge, Valve’s representative Pierre-Loup Griffais revealed these details on the new console in a recent interview and said that the company looks to get a significant increase in performance in the next Steam Deck while ensuring power efficiency.
Steam Deck 2 is Coming But Not For A Couple of Years

Steam Deck was launched in early 2022 and soon became the contender for the best console of the year. The handheld although had some issues such as its battery life, can run PC titles smoothly. The players have been hoping for Steam Deck 2 and Valve representative, Pierre-Loup Griffais had some updates.
Griffais, while talking to The Verge said that Steam Deck will not arrive for a couple of years and it could be until at least the end of 2025 or even 2026. Griffais stated,
“It’s important to us that the Deck offers a fixed performance target for developers, and that the message to customers is simple, where every Deck can play the same games. As such, changing the performance level is not something we are taking lightly, and we only want to do so when there is a significant enough increase to be had.”
He further added,
“We also don’t want more performance to come at a significant cost to power efficiency and battery life. I don’t anticipate such a leap to be possible in the next couple of years, but we’re still closely monitoring innovations in architecture and fabrication processes to see where things are going there.”

According to Griffais, Valve aims to make sure the Steam Deck 2 can play the same games without affecting the device’s performance. He said the company is cautious about the performance and they do not want performance by compromising the battery life and power efficiency.

Griffais also confirmed that the company is going all out to make a Steam Deck successor with “innovations in architecture and fabrication” but Valve can’t maintain both performance and battery life in the next few years.
He admitted that the console has faced a major problem with its battery life. The battery life of Steam Deck is a big issue while running both SteamOS and Windows and Valve needs to find a solution to this if it wants to do better with the next iteration.
The prospect of Steam Deck 2 is exciting and with what Valve has planned, the company should hold out and launch the hardware it best believes in. It would be exciting to see what Valve has in store for gamers and would the console be able to beat new and faster handhelds such as Asus ROG Ally.
Steam Deck 2 will most probably come at the end of 2025 or early 2025, no sooner than that
There have also been rumors that Steam Deck 2 could have an OLED display. While it is expected for the new console to at least have double the performance, it remains to be seen if Valve will just bring new powerful hardware or will also solve the problems plaguing the console.
