The global anime community is in mourning following the announcement that veteran voice actress Wakana Yamazaki has passed away at the age of 61. She died on April 18, 2026; however, her agency, Aoni Production, made the official announcement on May 15 (via Oricon Japan).
Best known as the voice of Ran Mouri in the legendary series Detective Conan (Case Closed), Yamazaki was a cornerstone of the industry for over three decades. Now, Ran Mouri would be temporarily voiced by Akemi Okamura, who is famously known as the voice of One Piece‘s iconic character, Nami. Reportedly, Okamura will continue to give voice to Mouri following Yamazaki’s demise (via Oricon).
For millions of fans, Yamazaki’s voice was the embodiment of strength and kindness. However, her career extended far beyond the streets of Beika City. From iconic 90s magical girl series to massive seafaring adventures, her range allowed her to portray diverse personalities that shaped the childhoods of multiple generations.
To honor her incredible legacy, here are five other famous characters voiced by Wakana Yamazaki that showcased her immense talent.
1. Meiko Akizuki — Marmalade Boy

Yamazaki’s Meiko Akizuki remains one of the most memorable supporting roles in Marmalade Boy, the Toei Animation adaptation of Wataru Yoshizumi’s shojo manga. The series centers on a high-school romance shaken by a startling family swap, which gives Meiko’s presence extra emotional weight in a story already full of messy feelings and teenage honesty. Yamazaki’s performance fit that tone perfectly, which is why the role still stands out decades later.
2. Ruri-Hime — Mononoke

In Mononoke, Yamazaki voiced Lady Ruri, often referred to as Ruri-Hime. The series is a Toei Animation horror anthology spin-off of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, and its “Nue” arc places Lady Ruri at the center of a deadly mystery inside an incense school. Her death is not just a plot point; it is the spark that pulls the Medicine Seller into the case. That makes the role more than a brief credit. It connects Yamazaki to one of anime’s most stylish supernatural series and to a character who drives the entire arc forward.
3. Koan — Sailor Moon R

Yamazaki’s Koan in Sailor Moon R shows a sharper, more villainous side of her range. Koan is the youngest of the four Spectre Sisters and comes to 20th-century Tokyo with Rubeus in search of the Rabbit and the Silver Crystal. That puts her right inside one of the most famous early Sailor Moon storylines, where the show starts expanding beyond simple monster-of-the-week battles into larger emotional stakes. Yamazaki gave Koan a real edge, which helped the character stand out among the Black Moon Clan’s many threats.
4. Nene — Samurai Warriors
Her Nene role in Samurai Warriors tied Yamazaki to a major historical action franchise from Koei Tecmo. Nene is the wife of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and a “maternal figure” who is bright, cheerful, and skilled in ninjutsu. That combination of warmth and battlefield toughness made the character memorable across the series. Yamazaki’s voice gave Nene both kindness and strength, which fit a character who is written as a supporter, fighter, and emotional anchor in one.
5. Nojiko — One Piece

In One Piece, Yamazaki voiced Nojiko, Nami’s adoptive sister. Nojiko is a key figure in the Cocoyasi Village and Arlong Park material, where her calm, protective nature adds heart to one of the series’ most painful early story arcs. Yamazaki’s work on Nojiko matters because the character helps show what Nami is fighting to protect. Her role as Nojiko also connected her to one of anime’s biggest franchises during One Piece’s early rise in popularity.
