Rockstar Games has released many games, and, of course, many mysteries still lie in the darkness. Not talking about ghosts and UFOs, because there’s one consistent mystery that remains unanswered, and that’s the alias of Strange Man from Red Dead Redemption.
In Red Dead Redemption, the character makes a debut, but it’s never explained who he really is. Sure, there are multiple theories explaining who he is, but Rockstar never made his identity clear to all. Why not reveal it all with Red Dead Redemption 3?

While Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t even out yet, there’s a loud fanbase for the Red Dead Redemption franchise, and everyone demands the same answer. Who exactly is Strange Man? The NPC just cannot be killed, proving he’s not a human. So many believe that the character is God or the devil himself.
The reason sounds plausible because Strange Man has always given cryptic answers about who he was. But the most important detail is that Strange Man knew all the sins John Marston had committed, and everyone else’s as well. So it’s easy to assume that he’s the devil or karma trying to show John the right path.
But again, Strange Man could also foreshadow the future, so many consider him to be the angel of death. During the final meeting with John, he cryptically reveals that the spot is the place where John and Abigail are buried, which also supports that theory.
But again, his alias was never revealed, and Red Dead Redemption 3 could finally close the chapter for good.
Dan Houser’s Idea Behind Adding the Strange Man
Just who exactly is he? | Image Credit: Rockstar Games
Dan Houser was the lead writer of both Red Dead Redemption games, and he answered questions about the origin of Mystery Man. Originally, RDR was a barren game because previous Rockstar titles had a lot of pedestrians and elements to fill the world.
To fill the void after stripping a lot of elements, Houser decided to add RPG-like elements to the game through NPCs. One of them was the Strange Man, and he was added. In a way, Strange Man was supposed to be the manifestation of John’s karma and to show him the right path. This is what Houser revealed on Lex Ridman’s Podcast.
So he was meant to be a kind of manifestation of your, you know, shadow, your karma, the devil somewhere, you know, just saw the world, and then we built out his backstory over time.
But again, that’s Dan Houser’s rendition of Strange Man and what he was supposed to be before being added to the game. But the version we see now could be a lot different, and that should be answered in a future game someday.
That was everything you needed to know about the mysterious Strange Man from the Red Dead Redemption franchise. Who do you think Strange Man is really? Share with us in the comments below!
