As of now, there is no official confirmation of a sequel to Jay Kelly. The film, a dramatic, character-driven piece starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, was released theatrically (limited run) and then on Netflix on December 5, 2025.
Moreover, the film seems to be built as a standalone, from what creator Noah Baumbach revealed to Tudum. Baumbach revealed that he actually crafted the film from the film’s last line, when Jay Kelly slowly speaks, “Can I go again? I’d like another one. “
I had the line for the ending, and I knew how I wanted it delivered. I didn’t know where it was going to be or how I was going to do it or who exactly was going to say it. One way of looking at Jay Kelly is that I reverse engineered an entire movie just to get to this last line.
That said, there is speculation inside the industry and among media outlets that a follow-up could emerge.
How Does Jay Kelly Set Up a Potential Sequel?
Even though Jay Kelly feels like a complete story arc, exploring actor Jay’s crisis, regrets, and midlife reckoning, the film leaves several threads intentionally unresolved.
The film can possibly explore his life after fame. Given that he wants to retire and live a quiet life, a sequel can explore the aftermath of his decision and a possible reconciliation with his father and his daughters, as well as his friends and employees.
The film concluded on a note of uncertainty. This open-endedness means his journey could continue: trying to rebuild relationships, find purpose beyond fame, or face new consequences.
Or perhaps, given the film centers on celebrity and Hollywood, there is nothing preventing another chapter. We might witness a resurgence of Jay Kelly, but this time, he might do it right. While the film is structured like a deep character study, a story could grow if there is appetite.
Adam Sandler on Why He Took the Role of Ron

Adam Sandler stars as Ron Sukenick, the faithful and longtime manager and confidant of Jay Kelly. Throughout the film, Ron puts Jay’s needs above his, even leaving his kids when Jay decides to take an impromptu trip across Europe.
In an interview with Tudum, Sandler revealed his work philosophy:
I’m at an age where I definitely have to look at what the most important thing is that year, what I’m taking on, who will be affected. It’s about doing the right thing, making sure that I’m focused for everybody if I can be.
As for why he decided to choose this film, the actor spoke from both his and George Clooney’s perspective, remarking:
We both identified with the subject matter, as we both know what it’s like to go away and make a movie. Life shuts down around you, and it’s all about the movie.
A raw exploration of life behind the spotlight, the role offered him a chance to reflect on loyalty, friendship, and what it takes to stay grounded when the world is chasing fame.
