Sylvester Stallone‘s career has been established in and around the action industry, Rambo undoubtedly being one of the biggest of them all. However, the lack of critical success suffered by Rambo 3 after its release hides a lesser-known fact about how it was affected by controversy and poor timing.
With the 1988 film coming out at the peak of the actor’s professional career, Rambo 3 was supposed to be nothing short of a hit straight out of the theaters. However, a series of unforeseen events centered around the time’s political setting made the film not only a bad box office product of entertainment, but also the subject of dangerous fan and media backlash.
Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo 3 Failed Due to Its Timing
One of the biggest factors that works toward a film’s commercial success is its timing. Throughout a calendar year, major studios hog release dates surrounding major holidays and weekends to get the most traffic at the box office. Of course, this strategy fails to work in the case of external unforeseen factors, such as political/religious backlash, pandemic, and negative PR.
For Rambo 3, the factor that contributed toward its failure was quite simple: the Cold War. Or the end of it, to be accurate. The plot’s content, based on the Soviet-Afghan War, heavily leaned into the Russian villains’ territory, showing Rambo singlehandedly going up against the villainous Soviets, destroying their defenses, and killing their powerful and ruthless colonel.
In a GQ video interview, Stallone claimed:
[Rambo III] was really well made, except from the time we were editing and the time it came out, Russia, who had been in a cold war with us for 40 years, decided to come over, shake hands, kiss and make up. And now, everyone goes, “What is Stallone trying to do? Start another war with Russia?”I mean, I would come into press conferences, and people would boo like, “Well, what are you trying to do?” I go, have you ever heard of the Cold War? What am I trying to do?Despite there being no logic behind the mass furor aimed at Stallone, the actor and his film provided an easy, glaring, tangible, and readily available target. As such, Rambo III ended up taking the brunt of the people’s raw emotions and anger at a confusing and pivotal moment of our history.
