Música is based on a true story by its writer, director, composer, and star, Rudy Mancuso. The semi-autobiographical film draws heavily from Mancuso’s real-life experiences growing up as a Brazilian-American in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood while living with synesthesia.

Música brought together the now-engaged couple Camila Mendes and Rudy Mancuso. The duo first met during Mendes’ screen test for the role of Isabella in April 2022, when she joined the project as both star and executive producer. Undeniably, a romance blossomed that blurred the lines between their on and off-screen relationship.
Camila Mendes and Rudy Mancuso’s On-Set Chemistry Was Electric
Both Mendes and Mancuso described their first meeting as electric, with Mendes stating (via People):
We have this two-minute silent footage, because there was no audio on the day, this silent footage of us talking and interacting, and we have it all recorded so you can see that there’s this exciting energy and this giddiness
What added to their chemistry was their shared Brazilian-American heritage, and Mancuso giddily states:
We felt like we had known each other for years. We were very culturally aligned. We have similar upbringings, we have similar creative taste, and it became our project. Up until we met, it was my project and then it became ours.
Their shared heritage and the telling of a story of immigrants is crucial to today’s America.

Rudy Mancuso’s autobiographical elements accurately reflect his upbringing, as he shot approximately 80% of the film in Newark’s Ironbound area, where he grew up. Mancuso did not want to compromise on his vision, stating (via U Miami):
I knew my first film had to be something so personal that only I could tell it. At a time when it feels like we’ve heard every story and every perspective – we haven’t. I explored two perspectives that I’d never seen on screen, the Brazilian-American experience and the synesthetic experience. Every person in this room has a story that only they can tell.
The film follows Rudy, who lives with his loving but overbearing Brazilian mother in a Newark neighborhood called The Ironbound, a community filled with Brazilian and other immigrants. He studies (and fails and hates) business in college while making music in his bedroom and performing puppet shows in the subway (via U Miami). Here are key details of the film.
