As the One Piece Final Saga unfolds (the Egghead Island arc streamed on Crunchyroll through 2024-2025), fans are buzzing with excitement and caution. The series has built decades of layered mysteries. From the Void Century to the true nature of the Straw Hats’ legacies, which is their greatest strength but could also become a liability.
Creator Eiichiro Oda has signaled the story will accelerate with “major revelations” on the horizon (via GeekTyrant). At the same time, there is still a massive chunk of story left to tell, including the unresolved Void Century and the coming final war. In other words, every long-running question carries huge stakes. If the answers don’t live up to years of build-up, the fanbase could be disappointed.

One Piece thrives on its sprawling, interwoven mysteries. Oda has gradually offered clues about core secrets such as the final island, Laugh Tale, the Ancient Kingdom, and the meaning behind the “D” initial. This has kept readers engaged and theorizing. For example, Oda has dropped subtle hints about the Will of D, Joy Boy’s legacy, and the mysterious final island, Laugh Tale.
This drip of information fuels speculation: Crunchyroll’s GeekTyrant observes that the final saga “kicked off” in 2022 and has been “lining up the pieces needed for a big finale.” Such complexity is a known strength (it keeps the world rich and fans invested), but it’s also a delicate balancing act.
Logically, there is so much story yet to unfold. Even as the pace picks up, One Piece isn’t hitting the brakes on its storytelling. The Void Century and the shape of the final war are still open questions. Meanwhile, fans are eagerly waiting to learn about legendary elements like the Ancient Kingdom, Imu’s hidden plans, Shanks’ goals, and Joy Boy’s contribution. In short, dozens of long-seeded plot points must be resolved. Every tease raises expectations: one misstep or unsatisfying payoff could feel even bigger after so much hype.
Oda has tried to reassure fans he won’t rush through answers. He promised the story will move at a “breakneck speed,” but “that faster pace doesn’t mean cutting corners” (via GeekTyrant).

This suggests he plans to answer key questions carefully, even amid a quickened finale. Joyboy, Imu, and the Will of D Carry the Story’s Heaviest Burden

Several specific legends exemplify this tension between strength and risk. Joy Boy is a prime example. Introduced only in fragments, Joy Boy was a pirate of the Void Century who visited Laugh Tale, the Grand Line’s final island. As the lore goes, Joy Boy came to Laugh Tale 800+ years ago and left behind a priceless treasure, which later became the One Piece.
When Joy Boy’s full story comes out, along with the reason for that apology, his role in history, and how it ties to Luffy, it will be among the saga’s biggest twists. But if the explanation falls flat or contradicts fan theories, it could sour the impact of all those long-hinted clues.
Imu is another looming unknown. Introduced late in the story, Imu is the secret ruler sitting on the World Government’s Empty Throne. Even above the Five Elders. Virtually nothing is known about Imu aside from ominous imagery (a shadowy figure rubbing the head of Kuma, for example). Oda himself declined to reveal Imu’s identity, only saying this character is ancient and tied to the Void Century, and that the truth will be “a shocker” (via TOI).
In anime terms, the Egghead arc showed Imu reacting to a broadcast, indicating Imu is aware of Luffy, Teach, Shirahoshi, and others. But we still don’t know Imu’s goal or powers. Imu’s mystery is central to the final saga: if Oda reveals Imu to be truly monstrous (as suspected), fans expect a payoff commensurate with the years of buildup. Otherwise, the creepily cryptic figure might feel underused.
Finally, the “Will of D”, which is the hidden legacy of those who bear the initial D. It remains a core enigma. Oda has teased that the Will of D will be fully explained sooner than we expect, framing it as a “forgotten ideology” that opposes oppression. In essence, characters with a D in their name (Monkey D. Luffy, Portgas D. Ace, Trafalgar D. Law, etc.) are implied to be fated to challenge the tyrannical World Government.
Fans have long theorized about the D’s meaning (some even call them the “natural enemies of God”. The worry is that if Oda’s reveal of the D’s significance is too vague or trivial, it could undercut the weight of every D-character introduction over the past 30 years.
Joy Boy’s history, Imu’s identity, and the Will of D are why One Piece fans are glued to the story now, and also why they are anxious. The Final Saga promises answers to the series’ greatest questions, but it walks a fine line. If he succeeds, the Final Saga will cement One Piece’s status as a masterpiece. If not, the very things that made the series exciting for decades could be its undoing.
