It may have been a while since we got the list of stars that will be present in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, but people have recently found a glaring issue in it after closer inspection. As it turns out, Marvel has brought in 27 stars for the film in total, where only 5 of them are female, while 22 of them are male (via Deadline).
This shows a glaring problem of a lack of female superheroes that the MCU has fumbled since the end of the franchise’s Phase 4. At the same time, it also indicates the reliance of Marvel Studios on legacy characters after the string of failures that it has experienced in recent years.
Female Superheroes Who Can Potentially Appear in Doomsday

Although they may not have been officially announced, numerous instances suggest that some female superheroes from the MCU roster are making a secret return. Among them, the most notable is the reported return of Brie Larson to the franchise, who was possibly seen wearing a Captain Marvel wig while voting at the Statewide Special Election this year.
Another prominent star that might be making a return on the big screen is none other than Famke Janssen, who played the role of Jean Grey in the original X-Men trilogy in the 2000s. In an interview, the actress was using the classic MCU tactic of denying her return as Jean Grey in the upcoming film.
And last, but not least, actress Sophia Di Martino, who played the role of Sylvie in Loki, may also be returning as her character in the upcoming film. In a now-deleted Instagram post, she and her stunt double were seen in the UK at the time when Doomsday was being filmed there (via Collider), suggesting her appearance was likely.
While these and other possible appearances may not be confirmed, we might get a surprise from Marvel Studios, considering they hid the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers before releasing the teaser for the film recently.
Marvel Studios Lacked in Building Female Superheroes in the MCU
After Phase 4, Marvel Studios made an effort to develop more female superheroes who could stand on their own in the MCU in the future. But certain decisions and fumbles led to their reception by the fandom being less than satisfactory.
For once, the overall dip in the quality of these productions led to the fandom becoming skeptical about each new project that was released, where the continuation of the trend led to ever-declining interest. The best example of this is The Marvels, which proved to be one of, if not the biggest, box office failures in MCU history due to a sheer lack of trademark franchise quality.
At the same time, shows like Ironheart, despite building on the legacy of old heroes, only managed to tear down what made the MCU what it was. While Riri Williams was supposed to be Iron Man’s successor, she only disregarded what Stark managed to achieve, making fans naturally standoffish.
Thus, with just a few good examples of female heroes like Shuri, Ghost, Yelena, and now Susan Storm and Mystique, they only managed to lessen their pool of female characters to choose from.
