The Supreme Leader of the World Government in One Piece, Imu, has been the most mysterious character in the series for a long time. There are many theories and speculations around him, and his developments bring major changes to the narrative. One such speculated development that has confused fans was evidently witnessed during the Dressrosa arc.

According to u/Good-Signature4120 on Reddit, one of the butterflies that fly around Imu in the Room of Flowers was present in one of the One Piece episodes featuring the Dressrosa storyline. This has led to speculations that maybe Imu had something planned for the main antagonist of the arc, Donquixote Doflamingo.

Did Imu Have a Specific Plan for One Piece’s Most Menacing Villain?

Although Imu has taken the place of the main villain in One Piece, he was officially introduced pretty late in the story. Fans first saw him during the Levely Arc, as he went to an underground frozen chamber deep within Pangaea Castle. Later on, he was witnessed in the Room of Flowers as he cut apart Luffy and Blackbeard’s wanted posters and stabbed Princess Shirahoshi’s photo.

It was later established that the Room of Flowers is the place where Imu spends most of his time, and he is often surrounded by butterflies. Considering the mystery around the butterflies, One Piece fans assume that they might play a bigger or symbolic role in the story. This led to every butterfly moment in the past episodes coming under the radar of the fans.

The most enticing one was in Episode 699, where Doflamingo is seen slicing a butterfly into pieces and then stomping on it as he explained his past. Although it was a development in the past, fans assumed that Oda might have foreshadowed a connection between him and the One Piece Supreme Leader, which he hinted at through the butterflies in the Room of Flowers.

As fans already know, Doflamingo is somehow connected deeply to the lore of One Piece’s history, and this speculation only hyped up his role within the narrative. There is a possibility that Imu might have a specific plan for him, but this development has a major plot hole that negates this theory. While the butterfly scene was a part of the anime series, it was not seen in the One Piece manga, thus making it a non-canon development.

Decoding the Connection Between Imu and the Butterflies

Ever since Imu’s character was introduced in One Piece, he has been seen either sitting on the Empty Throne or roaming around in the Room of Flowers. In the Room of Flowers, Imu is almost always surrounded by a bunch of butterflies that initially were believed to be a part of the room’s natural environment, which is filled with plants and ivy growing all over the walls.

However, One Piece fans believe that they have a symbolic purpose that explains Imu’s quest to change the world and assert complete dominance over it. Some fans even believe that the butterflies represent souls or the life force of those who are “eliminated” by Imu. There are also theories about the butterflies hinting at Imu’s transformation, which is one of the most thrilling mysteries in One Piece.

While Eiichiro Oda himself has never officially made any comment about it, considering Imu’s involvement in the ongoing arc, it is safe to assume that we will soon get to find out more about him. Hopefully, it will also include the hidden mystery behind the Room of Flowers and the butterflies. Do you think the butterflies have any significance in One Piece? Let us know below!
