In a surprising debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 29th, 2025, Park Chan-Wook’s new dark comedy thriller No Other Choice received an 8 Minute 30 Second standing ovation (via Deadline), and this has officially beaten the record of an 8 Minute ovation that was given to Bong Joon-Ho’s classic Parasite (via Ariang News).
The 12th movie from the Oldboy writer-director has now been recognised on an international stage in Venice. And with critics gushing over the film, it’ll be interesting to see whether the audience has the same reception to it.
Why Park Chan-Wook’s No Other Choice Received Such a Standing Ovation

Heading towards a similar result that Parasite received at The Oscars, No Other Choice‘s performance is being appreciated so much because of its emotionally charged premise, packaged with social satire. The entire film is a commentary and a critique of modern desperation (via Screen Daily).
Even for its debut at the Busan Film Festival, it has been selected as the opening film for the 30th edition, marking it as a key cinematic event for the festival and a grand recognition for the film (via BIFF).
In addition, the film’s claim to fame is Chan-Wook’s style of adding real topics to dark, twisted humor, mixed with psychological drama, which culminates in a rollercoaster experience of emotions. Here, the topics are capitalism, toxic masculinity, and the slow disappearance of humanity from humans.
And finally, at the heart of the movie were the amazing performances by the cast, bringing every single idea of the writer-director to life through their acting. Thus, it’s no wonder the film received such an amazing ovation from the audience.
Parasite’s Success Emerged From Its Genre Amalgamation
Before Chan-Wook’s latest film, Joon-Ho became the shining light in terms of experimenting with genre-mixing in his films, of which Parasite is the best example. Considered as one of the greatest Korean thrillers of all time, this film proved how social commentary can be extremely diverse in terms of its narrative.
Parasite smoothly jumps between dark comedy, drama, thriller, and even horror without ever feeling messy. It kicks off as a clever satire on class differences and then turns into an intense psychological thriller that keeps you hooked the whole way through.
Unlike most movie plots, this film constantly subverts viewer expectations, along with bending genres by keeping them guessing what might happen next. This constant game of guessing and subversion makes the journey add to the thriller aspect of the movie.
And now, this factor was also witnessed in Chan-Wook’s new film, which is why both of them are being compared so much. Below is more information about the films in terms of their critical reception.
