Static Shock, one of the most powerful characters in the DC Comics, has been alleged to join James Gunn’s DCU in future projects. Gunn revealed that he plans to include Static Shock and The Authority in the DCU in future projects. However, that doesn’t mean that Gunn won’t face his fair share of hurdles during the time.

Gunn admitted to The New Blerd Order that the difficult task would be to integrate the character of Static Shock into the DCU because he hasn’t been established in the cinematic universe, much like The Authority.

It’s all about integrating him with the DC Universe, because he’s not a character that’s traditionally a part of the DC Universe. It’s kind of like The Authority. 

He continued,

The Authority’s been a little bit of a challenge simply because integrating him with the DCU has been a difficult thing to do, and the same thing is true of Static Shock, and hopefully we’ll figure out a way to do that.

Well. That’s not the only problem that James Gunn is going to face, since the wife of Static Shock’s co-creator also sued the corporation before for trying to revive her late husband’s creations.

Veteran producer Reginald Hudlin teamed up with other people to relaunch a company called Milestone Media. The aim of the company was to revive the creator Dwayne McDuffie’s characters and bring them back to life.

McDuffie famously co-created the character of Static Shock for DC Comics back in the early days. However, McDuffie’s widow filed a lawsuit against Milestone Media, alleging that the estate had been excluded from the company revival. Well, that brings the character of Static Shock to a standstill.

How Powerful is Static Shock in DC Comics?

Simply going by the name of Static, the character is incredibly powerful in DC Comics. Known as Virgil Hawkins, he wasn’t born with superpowers, but due to an incident, he was exposed to powerful radioactive chemicals called “Quantum Juice.”

This exposure results in Virgil turning into a Bang Baby (a sub-category of metahumans). However, this also granted the character of Static Shock some amazing powers, such as the ability to control electromagnetic fields.

Ergo, Static Shock becomes the powerful equivalent of Magneto with the added powers of Electro as well. Not only that, but the character is also quite agile and athletic, leading to becoming one of the most powerful characters in DC Comics.

Naturally, we can safely assume why James Gunn would want a powerful character like Static in his DCU.

Why the DCU Needs Static’s Awesome Powers

Fans might remember that James Gunn has a habit of including bizarre and unknown characters in his movies that only comic book fans might know about. Characters like Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man, and the Guardians were made famous by the director.

With a powerful persona, a chill personality, and plenty of humor from Gunn, Static could provide the DCU a breath of fresh air, much like Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific did with Superman.

Being a much younger superhero, Static can provide that street-level superhero stuff that Spider-Man is known for in the MCU. This will provide a newer perspective into James Gunn’s world.

Having teamed up with Teen Titans and Justice League in the past, we also know that Static is a team person and will not have a problem fitting in the Justice League or any other teams in the DCU.
