Nicolas Cage’s Best Movie Gets Theatrical Release After 4 Years

After a string of critically panned works, Nicolas Cage flipped the script with 2021’s Pig, an acclaimed drama that shifted the consensus surrounding Cage the actor. Like many other movies that were released during the pandemic era, the Neon-backed drama was affected by COVID, which resulted in a year-long delay, and the movie eventually opened to limited screens.

However, with several Indie banners joining forces to celebrate the movies that were impacted by COVID, Neon’s Pig, alongside other notable Indie titles from the pandemic era, will be returning to theaters this December (via Variety).

How Pig Refined Nicolas Cage’s Late-Career Run?

Nicolas Cage hit a career low in the 2010s, as most of his works were direct-to-DVD releases, and more often than not, they were pretty abysmal. Although Cage, known for his eccentric approach to the medium, tried his best to salvage these projects, which he was forced to partake in following financial troubles, the critical panning left an undeniable stain on his career.

As the story goes, Pig heavily shifted this growing consensus around Cage’s career. Not only was the movie received immensely well, but many also argued that it’s his best work to date. Cage’s restrained performance set against a narrative of grief and redemption serves as an antithesis to what fans have come to expect from Cage.

Moreover, Pig wasn’t a lightning in the rod for Cage, as since then, the actor has gone on to star in many beloved productions, like Dream Scenario, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and Longlegs. With Cage now set to reunite with John Woo for his next major project, titled Gambino, gone are the days when fans used to associate Cage with low-quality VOD releases.

Everything to Know About Pig‘s Rerelease

Coming back to Pig, the movie that commenced the late-stage renaissance for the actor, is scheduled to run from December 12-14 at Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, alongside other notable movies that missed out on a proper theatrical run.

Other venues that will host these movies, described as Lost Films of COVID, include Nitehawk Cinemas in Brooklyn, New York, the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, Ohio, and the Harris Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Speaking of this initiative, Netahawk founder Matthew Viragh told Variety:

When Filmbot approached us with the idea to honor some of the ‘lost’ films released during COVID that didn’t quite get their due at movie theaters, we jumped at the opportunity! We’ve only scratched the surface and there are many more films that could be included, so maybe this series can live on annually and build a larger and larger line up in the future

Hopefully, the movie will attract more eyes upon its rerelease, as its impact on Cage’s career and stature as an actor remains undeniable.
