James Gunn recently took to social media to address rumors of Supergirl‘s budget, denying recent reports that suggested how much the film is set to cost.
What did James Gunn say about Supergirl’s budget?
In a recent post on Threads, Gunn was asked about Supergirl’s budget, which was recently rumored to be somewhere around $200 million. Gunn wasted little time in denying the report, saying that there was absolutely no truth to the news.
The original rumor suggested that Supergirl’s budget would come in slightly under Superman‘s rumored $225 million. As it stands, it’s unknown just how much the movie cost. It’s also unclear what the film’s “break even” point will be, given the uncertainty around the film’s budget.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. The film stars Millie Alcock, who will play the titular role of Kara Zor-El and will be written by Ana Nogueira and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
“We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunn of the project in 2023. “She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which was illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie with a release date currently set for June 26, 2026.
