Davido Opens Up About Being on the Run When He Released Dami Duro
Davido has shared the remarkable story behind one of the biggest songs of his career, revealing that he was on the run from his family when he released his breakout hit, Dami Duro.
Speaking in a recent interview with VIBE, the Afrobeats superstar reflected on the period leading up to the song’s release, explaining that he was just 17 years old, nearing 18, and had taken full control of the record’s production.
“I was 17 going on 18. I mixed and mastered that song myself. There was no planning. We just dropped. I was even on the run at the time, from my family, when I dropped that record.”
Davido also revealed that the lyrics of Dami Duro were inspired by the challenges he was facing at the time, particularly the tension surrounding his decision to pursue music despite coming from a wealthy family.
“If you listen to the record, ‘Ẹ má dámi dúró, èmi ọmọ bàbá ọlọ́wọ́,’ like, ‘Stop trying to stop me. I’m the son of a rich man.’ So that was what I was going through at that time. You know what I’m saying?”
Released in 2011, Dami Duro became the song that introduced Davido to mainstream audiences, launching a career that has since made him one of Africa’s biggest music stars. More than a decade later, the record remains a defining anthem in Afrobeats history.
