It was actually a real impetus behind us writing Good Will Hunting, because when Ben and I went out for that role, and Edward beat out everybody, and as he should have, he was phenomenal in the movie
Feeling stuck and realizing that waiting for studios to hand him transformative opportunities was a dead end, Damon joined forces with his best friend Ben Affleck to finish writing Good Will Hunting. The result was an astonishing victory: taking control of their own destinies earned them the 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
