House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 follows up with the Winter Wolves adapting to the Riverlands while Rhaenyra’s grip on King’s Landing might be too tight. Second-guessing herself and her advisors opens the door for potential trouble across Westeros.

What happens in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5?
Rhaenyra’s forces continue their path toward Tumbleton but cannot cross the rivers because Criston Cole’s forces keep burning the crosses. Lord Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes) and Ser Roderick Dustin (Tommy Flanagan) receive a briefing from a worried soldier. Lord Oscar sends riders up ahead but admits they’ll be delayed at least another week. Ser Roderick asks if his Winter Wolves can go on the hunt, but as they discuss, the scout party is attacked by Cole (Fabien Frankel) and his guerrilla fighters.
Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) interrupts a group of mercenaries looking for Aemon Targaryen. She tells them a ghost story about Harrenhal but then scares them by unleashing bats on them. Hidden away in the castle, Daemon (Ewan Mitchell) awakens after a nightmare about Aegon’s burning. Alys holds him as he calms down, and he slowly begins to hold her tight, repeating “Mother.”
Grand Maester Orwyle (Kurt Egyiawan) lies to a guard to hand over moon Tea for Helaena (Phia Saban) but tells Alicent (Olivia Cooke) he can no longer be loyal to her. While the former queen refuses to take it, Alicent reminds her daughter that keeping the baby will be a threat to Rhaenyra. They may both die if she gives birth to a boy. Helaena pushes it away, despite assurances from Alicent that she has used moon Tea, as has Rhaenyra. Instead, she refuses again.

Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) walks through the Red Keep as Sabitha Fray (Sarah Woodard) yells at her for promising to give away Harrenhal. She expects the crown to honor their promises, which allowed the Winter Wolves across the Twins. In the meantime, they will accept a seat on the council. Ser Torrhen Manderly (Dan Fogler) fills in Lady Frey about those on the small council, while Rhaenyra tries to keep the meeting focused on Vhagar and Aemond. However, Daemon (Matt Smith) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) continue to snipe at each other.
Rhaenyra wants to send Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia) and Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty), but they’re exhausted from their journey. When she tries to send Daemon, he refuses, instead telling her they must deal with the murders of the Gold Cloaks. The meeting breaks, and outside, he reminds her that they’re in power because the Gold Cloaks sided with them. They need to show their power, not chase after graffiti. They are interrupted when Prince Joffrey arrives.
Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) march through the woods despite Larys’ pleas to turn back to their previous situation. Aegon refuses because now that he knows his brother is within reach, he wants him dead. Cole and Ser Gwayne (Freddie Fox) ride through the woods, getting ready to strike another crossing. While Ser Gwayne offers Cole riches to serve his family at Oldtown, they are ambushed by a trap to disable their horses. The Winter Wolves have somehow run ahead of them.
In the Red Keep, Mysaria confronts Alicent about receiving mfoon Tea. Alicent lies that the tea is for her, drinking it to sell the lie. Mysaria warns her about lying to Rhaenyra. Realizing there are spies all around her, Alicent grows uncomfortable around her chambermaids. Daemon and Luther (Tom Cullen) walk the streets of Flea Bottom. Daemon warns that they’re over-enforcing Rhaenyra’s commands. On their walk, they find two more Gold Cloaks have been slain.
Spies in Flea Bottom report back to Ormund Hightower (James Norton), who orchestrates the killings from Tumbleton. He commands Ser Jon Roxton (Joplin Sibtain) to expedite the changes to the battlements before Rhaenyra’s soldiers arrive. Ormund checks in with Prince Daeron (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) about his studies. They play a game while Ormund tells his ward about Meria Martell, who resisted Aegon during his conquest and led to a free Dorne for centuries. She beat her enemy through wit, not power. Daeron wins the match, and while Ormund seems upset at first, he then hands over coins he had made. Daeron’s face will spread across the land as a new challenger to the throne.
Helaena sits with her daughter in the gardens as Allicent approaches. As the babe runs off, Alicent tells Helaena they must leave the castle tonight. The turmoil with the Gold Cloaks will leave fewer guards tonight. Alicent traded her necklace to a servant to help them through a passage and past Baela’s room. Helaena refuses again, unable to leave her lone remaining child.
Baela and Addam continue to investigate Vhagar’s path but cannot find the dragon. Addam demands that Baela eat, but she reminds him that the Queen no longer trusts her. With her future in shambles, she fears she’ll be sold off to pay Rhaenyra’s debts. Addam promises he will find her and they’ll fly away into exile.
Aemond dreams of Vhagar, but when he rises, Alys tells him that his dragon flew into the night. Aemond walks through Harrenhal, hearing roaring sounds echoing through the halls. However, he only finds the edge of the castle. Alys tells Aemond the news that Rhaenyra has spread through the lands; Aemond is being called a kingslayer and kinslayer, but Alys does not believe it.
Aegon opens up to Larys, telling him he knows he cannot fight Aemond without his dragon. Larys worries that they’ll be caught out of the camp after nightfall, but Aegon ignores him, continuing to rant about his brother. Larys takes a brief break to tell off Aegon for his nonstop complaining and self-flagellation. Aegon had every advantage possible, and it was through his own ineptitude that led him to this moment. Larys calls him a terrible king and worse, a terrible man.
Rhaenyra stands in the Sept of Baelor to show her deference to the Seven. Daemon laughs at her actions, but they sit at the table, arguing in Valyrian. She worries that the gods have turned away from her after clearing a path to the throne. Deamon reminds her that merely being a woman was always going to invite challenges. Rhaenyra grows frustrated with the number of issues facing their side, claiming Aemond and others have outdone Daemon.
At the camp, Aegon rejoins Larys and, after an awkward moment, asks Larys to hire a ship. They’re interrupted by a cloaked figure asking, “What ship might that be?” They are surprised to find Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) standing in front of them. News of his death has been greatly exaggerated. Jason pleads with Larys for them to journey to Casterly Rock, but their hand is forced when someone finds Aegon’s crown. The former king kills the man, and the group must leave.
Alicent and Helaena dress in maids’ clothes to escape, but as soon as they turn the corner, Mysaria waits. Back in their rooms, Alicent begs Mysaria lies to Rhaenyra and reminds her that Daemon is the only one who will rule with her. She believes that Mysaria’s best play is to keep her secrets instead of following the queen. She tries to bargain, but Mysaria turns away without speaking. Helaena demands to go outside, but Alicent tells her to use the window. Rhaenyra checks in on Joffrey, but he has fallen asleep.
Sellswords arrive at Harrenhal looking for Aemond. Alys tries to dissuade them from searching for him, but instead they attack her. Aemond arrives and slays them all. At King’s Landing, the Gold Cloaks are not only angry that they’re being killed, but they have not been paid. Daemon gives them a speech promising riches and conquest, winning them back to their side. The Cloaks find a conspirator, and after Deamon tortures him, he reveals one of the gold coins minted for “King Daeron.” Luthor executes the man.
Cole and Gwayne decide on a new path through the woods, trying to beat the Wolves to the crossing. They wander through the wreckage of a dragon, are attacked by bugs, and march through the rain. They arrive at the final bridge, only to discover the Tullys and Starks have crossed ahead of them. They burned the bridge, leaving Cole and Gwayne stranded.

Gwayne believes they should return to Tumbleton, but Cole insists they raft across the river. Gwayne realizes that Cole chases death at all costs. Criston confirms that he believes his legacy will only come in glorious battle. He makes a speech to the remaining soldiers to follow him into battle. As he does, Gwayne leaves the party and sets out for Tumbleton.
Alicent and Helaena find a secret passageway. They head into darkness, but when they discover the way is shut, they lose their lanterns and their light. Daemon reveals the gold piece to Rhaenyra and tells her, “We should have burned them when we had the chance.” He returns to his Gold Cloaks, but finds Ser Luthor and a dozen of his men have been slain and mutilated. Over their heads, “A Feast for Traitors” is written on the walls in blood.
Is House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 worth watching?
Yes, the intrigue in House of the Dragon is heating up. As more plans come to the forefront, it is clear that Rhaenyra’s crown is already hanging by a thread. As she struggles to maintain King’s Landing, she loses one of her most valuable allies. While this comes at a different time than in Fire and Blood, it seemed like Ser Luthor was never long for this world. Having him die in such a gross way has certainly forced Daemon to pay attention.
The war going on for control of Rhaenyra’s ear is also coming to a head. Mysaria seems genuinely frustrated by her Queen’s lack of attention, while Daemon does not seem to recognize that his actions will weaken her standing. While George R.R. Martin certainly thought of Daemon as one of his most beloved characters, he does not quite have the wit that Martin once praised him for having. While he might be a great warrior, his diplomatic choices leave a bit to be desired. He directly led to the death of Gold Cloaks, with the slaughter in their halls likely causing an uproar among the few troops who remain.
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra cannot manage the Tullys, the Starks, or the Freys. As each group demands more of her allegiance, she will inevitably have to pick favorites. We know that the Freys would eventually be part of one of the great betrayals of all time, but that does not seem to be their role in this story. If Rhaenyra can manage their growing egos, perhaps alliances with the Starks and Tullys will ultimately be the winning formula.
Of course, those forces need to pass Criston Cole on a suicide mission. We know that the Winter Wolves are regarded as one of the most formidable forces of all time, but House of the Dragon has not had a chance to prove it yet. For Episode 6, it seems likely we’re going to lead into one of the great battles of the season. Yet Tumbleton is still on the horizon, giving House of the Dragon Season 3 runway to deliver the grandiose spectacle we’re used to watching in Westeros.
Meanwhile, Aegon moves in the shadows with Larys. Reuniting with the Lannisters was a surprise given the supposed “death” of Jason. With new forces assembling, another army in Westeros seems like it could break Rhaenyra’s grip. Can they return to Casterly Rock soon enough to help Tumbleton? Or are the Hightowers approaching dangerous territory? Their move to crown Daeron as the “true king” could not only upset Rhaenyra, but Aegon in the process.
Finally, Aemond is on the mend. His role in this game is far from over, and with Alys Rivers seemingly boosting him up, we have legitimate questions about her motives. She wants Harrenhal, but will she actually get it from Aemond? Or can she strike a deal with Rhaenyra to claim the castle for her own? With big fights on the horizon, it seems like House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 is a great reset while still showing the dangerous game enveloping Rhaenyra.
