The long-awaited live-action Voltron film, starring Henry Cavill, has officially secured a release window, bringing the beloved 1980s franchise back to the screen after nearly four decades. Fans of the iconic Robot Lion can finally mark their calendars, or at least the year.

Voltron live-action movie sets release date window

The Voltron live-action adaptation release date window is sometime in 2027. While Amazon MGM Studios hasn’t locked down a specific release date yet, the possibility confirms that the project is moving full steam ahead after years of development (via The Wrap).

The studio secured distribution rights back in 2022, and production moved quickly. Filming began in late 2024 and wrapped by mid-2025 in Australia, setting it up for a substantial post-production period. It could be essential for a film centered on five robotic lions combining into a massive warrior.

The original Voltron animated series debuted in 1984 and ran for more than 100 episodes. It centered on pilots commanding five robotic lions that combine into the mighty Voltron to battle threats like King Zarkon and Haggar. The franchise has continued through various iterations over the decades, including Voltron: The Third Dimension, Voltron Force, and Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender, plus comic books and games.

Henry Cavill will reportedly play King Alfor, while Rita Ora takes on Haggar the Dark Witch and Sterling K. Brown steps into the role of Zarkon. They will be joined by Daniel Quinn-Toye, Alba Baptista, John Harlan Kim, Tharanya Tharan, and Samson Kayo. Additionally, Tim Griffin, Laura Gordon, Keanu Karim, Nathan Jones, and Kevin Spink. Rounding out the ensemble. Becki Cross Trujillo, Roberto Zenca, and Matthew Scully.

Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing the Voltron live-action, bringing experience from action-comedy hits like Red Notice, Central Intelligence, and Skyscraper. He co-wrote the screenplay with Ellen Shanman and also produced alongside Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman.
