A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms star Peter Claffey spilled some really juicy details about author George R.R. Martin at the CCXP convention in São Paulo, Brazil. The Irish actor will be playing Ser Duncan the Tall in the upcoming series, and talking about his first meeting with Martin, he shared during the panel interview (via IGN):
It was awesome. He came in to set that week and we got to talk to him and different things, and he told us that The Hedge Knight is his favorite thing he’s ever written. So he kind of told Ira Parker, our showrunner and writer, ‘Please don’t mess it up.’ But he seemed really happy with us and with everyone else, and especially Daniel Ings, who’s playing Ser Lyonel Baratheon.
Martin has mentioned in his own blog about how much he loved Tales of Dunk and Egg and how excited he is to see the project come to life in 2026. Together with showrunner Ira Parker, Martin is also a co-creator and executive producer of the show.
GRRM Ensured HBO’s Faithful Adaptation of Tales of Dunk and Egg
Martin is very much involved in the making of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and he has nothing but praise for the outcome. Writing on Not A Blog, the famed author revealed:
I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them.
This can only mean that the whole team worked hand in hand to bring a faithful portrayal of Tales of Dunk and Egg. We recall how, in the past year, Martin publicly lambasted House of the Dragon for all the massive changes that happened. Fans can expect the same blunder won’t happen in the upcoming prequel.
Martin did warn fans, though, that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms won’t be like Game of Thrones. “It’s a little softer. It’s a little more humorous,” he told Collider. That doesn’t diminish the fact that this is another exciting adventure in Westeros; it’s just shifting the lens on the other side of the realm that the audience has never seen before.
Ira Parker Helmed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to Satisfy GRRM
Parker is very much aware of Martin’s love for this particular novella, so he made it his mission to produce the adaptation that would earn him the author’s approval. In his conversation via Temple of Geek, he shared:
They say when you’re writing that you should not try to please everybody, that you shouldn’t write for the audience, that you should pick one person and you should write for them. And this season, Season 1, I did that for George. The fact that he’s happy makes me very happy as well, too.
He also acknowledged Martin’s presence as beneficial to the show, crediting him for ensuring the tone and authenticity of the adaptation.
